What does a junior embedded Linux engineer do?

A Junior Embedded Linux Engineer assists in developing, testing, and maintaining software that runs on embedded devices using the Linux operating system. Their responsibilities often include writing code in languages like C or C++, configuring Linux kernel and device drivers, and troubleshooting hardware-software integration issues. They typically work under the guidance of senior engineers to learn best practices and contribute to projects such as IoT devices, consumer electronics, and industrial systems. This role requires a foundational understanding of Linux, programming, and embedded systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior embedded Linux engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Linux Engineer, you need proficiency in C/C++ programming, an understanding of Linux operating systems, and a relevant degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Job description

Overview

Lutron is seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer in Austin. You will design, automate, and operate the developer platform that powers our build, test, and release process for our various software platforms that integrate embedded Linux devices, cloud services, and customer-facing applications. Your work will support lighting, shading, and smart home solutions used in millions of homes and commercial spaces worldwide.

In this role, you will:

  • Own delivery of DevOps initiatives by aligning decisions across multiple teams and technical disciplines.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Software Architects, and Functional Area Owners to deliver durable platform solutions.
  • Apply and evaluate emerging technologies to solve complex delivery and operations problems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and develop technical capability within the team.
  • Balance long-term maintainability with near-term product and release commitments.
  • Champion security-by-design and responsible use of AI across DevOps practices, guiding teams on safe adoption of new tools and patterns.
  • Manage internal platform capabilities as products with roadmap, service health, and adoption focus.
Responsibilities
  • Build and operate enterprise CI/CD systems (CloudBees/Jenkins), including template standards, shared library design, plugin lifecycle control, and platform reliability improvements.
  • Create reusable pipeline steps, test orchestration, parallel execution, and pipeline performance tuning using Groovy.
  • Develop Terraform modules and lifecycle management, including backend/state strategy, promotion flow, policy guardrails, and drift mitigation.
  • Implement and maintain CasC for CI/CD and related developer platform services.
  • Manage Cloud Platform Automations including Functions, VM workflows, identity/group automation, and network/firewall change management.
  • Manage Artifactory lifecycle and promotion governance, release/signoff controls, and traceable deployment workflows.
  • Create API-based automation across Bitbucket, Jira, and Confluence for PR/signoff workflows, status synchronization, and docs automation.
  • Manage SonarQube administration and quality gates, dependency update automation, and security/compliance metrics in delivery pipelines.
  • Apply secure-by-default patterns (least privilege, secret management, dependency and image scanning) and partner with security teams to embed best practices into CI/CD workflows.
  • Create operational dashboards and alerts in New Relic for CI/CD and platform reliability visibility.
  • Proactively leverage modern AI tools and platforms (e.g., code assistants, AI-based test and log analysis, anomaly detection) to improve pipeline reliability, accelerate troubleshooting, and reduce manual toil; evaluate emerging AI capabilities and incorporate them into DevOps processes where they are secure, compliant, and cost-effective.
  • Deliver templates, runbooks, and libraries that reduce friction and improve engineering autonomy.
  • Implement safe change controls, rollback planning, risk-based approvals, and auditable operational practices.
  • Define and track KPIs including lead time, deployment frequency, pipeline success rate, and MTTR.
  • Drive alignment across embedded Linux, firmware, cloud services, and client application teams.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 for all completed degrees
  • 5+ years of industry DevOps and/or platform engineering experience
  • Experience with one of the following scripting languages: Python, Bash, or PowerShell
  • Experience with cloud platform automation
  • You are authorized to work in the U.S. and will not require Lutron to sponsor you for any work visa, such as an H-1B, either immediately or at any time in the future. Lutron does not offer work visa sponsorship for this position.
The ideal candidate would have:
  • Experience with Enterprise compliance and audit-ready release process experience
  • Experience creating shared automation libraries and templates used by multiple organizations.
  • Experience turning delivery/operations telemetry into executive-level reporting.
The heart of software development at Lutron starts with these principles:
  • Teams own “Problems to Solve” – Teams own high level objectives, outlined by the business, and engineer the solution to solve these problems
  • Continuous Improvement – As we shorten our release cycles and deliver always-connected software solutions, we are building the infrastructure to listen to our customers through feedback and data. We practice SAFe Agile Framework to ensure our teams are continuously improving and evolving with the needs of our customers.
  • Failing Fast – We want an inclusive environment where learning is not impeded by our process and failing is a natural part of the process to learn what is right.

Lutron Electronics’ position as the worldwide leader in innovative lighting control and shading solutions has enabled consistent, annual growth. Our company has cultivated a reputation of unsurpassed quality, a broad range of technologies and product offerings, and a strong commitment to servicing our worldwide customers. This has allowed the company to invest in developing new technologies and services, expand our technical capabilities and global presence, and to find and retain the best talent. Build your career with Lutron where you will enjoy competitive compensation and benefits while exploring many options for continued growth and education. Make a difference every day in our dynamic, people-centric, technology-driven organization. For more information, view our website at www.lutron.com.
