What is a junior DevOps?

Junior DevOps engineers are entry-level professionals who support the development and operations teams by automating processes, managing infrastructure, and ensuring continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. They typically work under the guidance of senior DevOps engineers to learn best practices for coding, deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Their responsibilities may include writing scripts, maintaining cloud environments, and collaborating with developers to streamline workflows. Junior DevOps roles are a great starting point for those interested in combining software development with IT operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior DevOps?

To thrive as a Junior DevOps, you need foundational knowledge of software development, system administration, and scripting languages like Python or Bash, usually backed by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), CI/CD tools (such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and willingness to learn make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure seamless development-to-deployment workflows, system reliability, and effective teamwork in dynamic tech environments.

What are some common challenges faced by junior DevOps professionals when first joining a team?

Junior DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced environment where automation and deployment processes are critical. Learning to work with various tools (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, containerization) and understanding existing infrastructure can be overwhelming at first. Collaborating closely with development, QA, and IT operations teams requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. However, with mentorship and hands-on experience, most juniors quickly become proficient and play a key role in streamlining workflows.

Job description

Vidoori is a digital transformation leader recognised for delivering excellence in cloud and software solutions. We are expanding our engineering capability and seek a motivated, hands‑on Senior Software Developer to join our team. This role focuses on delivering high‑quality software, contributing technical leadership within squads, and collaborating closely with product and design in an inclusive environment that values continuous learning and pragmatic innovation.

Role Overview – Senior Software Developer

Reporting to engineering leadership, the Senior Software Developer will be a core contributor to one or more product squads or platform teams. This role combines regular hands‑on development with technical mentorship, architecture contribution and ownership of delivery quality. You will design and implement reliable, maintainable systems, drive engineering best practices, and support continuous improvement across the codebase and delivery processes.

Key Responsibilities – Build, Mentor and Deliver

  • Develop production‑grade software across the stack: design, implement, test and deploy features and services with an emphasis on maintainability and performance.

  • Work collaboratively with product managers, designers and engineers to refine requirements, propose pragmatic technical solutions and break work into deliverable increments.

  • Drive code quality through thorough code reviews, automated testing, static analysis and adherence to agreed engineering standards.

  • Contribute to system architecture and design discussions; identify opportunities to reduce complexity, improve scalability and mitigate technical risk.

  • Own components or services end‑to‑end: monitoring, observability, incident response and continuous improvement based on post‑incident reviews.

  • Mentor mid and junior engineers by sharing knowledge, providing constructive feedback and supporting their professional development.

  • Champion CI/CD, infrastructure as code and repeatable delivery patterns to increase release predictability and reduce manual operational burden.

  • Identify and address technical debt; propose and lead refactoring or modernisation efforts where they deliver clear value.

  • Contribute to hiring, interviewing and onboarding activities to help grow a diverse and inclusive engineering team.

Essential Skills and Experience – Technical Competence

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proven experience (10+ years) in software engineering with a track record of delivering production systems.

  • Strong hands‑on experience with modern web and cloud‑native stacks, microservices or service‑oriented architectures, and RESTful or event‑driven APIs.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages commonly used in our stack (for example: Java, Kotlin, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Go) and familiarity with testing frameworks.

  • Experience with source control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform, ARM, CloudFormation).

  • Practical knowledge of observability and monitoring tooling, logging practices and performance profiling.

  • Experience working in agile teams: backlog refinement, sprint planning, incremental delivery and continuous improvement.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills; able to explain technical trade‑offs to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrable commitment to writing clear engineering artefacts: design notes, runbooks and post‑mortems.

Desirable Skills – Extended Capability

  • Experience with cloud providers (AWS, Azure or GCP) and related managed services.

  • Background in secure, compliant or regulated environments (public sector experience advantageous).

  • Familiarity with event streaming platforms (Kafka, Pub/Sub), serverless patterns or API gateways.

  • Experience contributing to developer experience initiatives, internal libraries or platform services.

  • Professional certifications in cloud or security technologies are beneficial.

Benefits and Career Development – Growth at Vidoori

  • Competitive salary with performance‑related bonus and incentives tied to delivery and technical outcomes.

  • Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid options to support a healthy work–life balance.

  • Supportive and inclusive culture with investment in professional development, training and mentorship opportunities.

  • Clear career progression into senior technical or engineering leadership roles.

  • Work on impactful projects across public sector and commercial clients, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Application Guidance – Opportunities at Vidoori

  • Location: Hybrid (DMV Area)

  • Employment Type: Full‑time

  • Eligibility: Must be U.S. Citizen

Join Vidoori as a Senior Software Developer and help us build reliable, scalable and customer‑focussed software. If you are a pragmatic, hands‑on engineer who enjoys mentoring colleagues and improving delivery, we encourage you to apply and contribute to a team dedicated to inclusive growth and impact.
