Job description

McLean School (mcleanschool.org), a K-12 co-educational independent school in Potomac, Maryland, seeks applicants for a Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach (Grades 9-12)
for the Fall 2026 season, which runs from August through the end of October.
McLean School has, for over 70 years, helped bright students realize their full potential by providing a comprehensive college-preparatory program that emphasizes small classes and differentiated instruction. Through our Abilities Model®, we embrace both traditional learners and those with mild-to-moderate learning challenges. We recognize and teach individual strengths, responding to areas of challenge, but never defining students by them.
The Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach is responsible for overseeing the team, serving as a positive role model, and supporting the School's Mission and Core Values.
This position reports directly to the Director of Athletics, Coaching, and Mentoring.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have
experience as a youth, high school, and/or club-level coach, experience with providing differentiated instruction to athletes of all levels, effective written and oral communication skills, knowledge of the fundamentals and techniques of competitive volleyball, an ability to build relationships and work well with others, and a sharp perspective on the role of athletics in the educational experience.
Essential Duties
  • Be a positive role model
  • Plan, direct, and administer policies for all team practices and matches
  • Communicate team expectations at the start of the season
  • Design training sessions that are dynamic, engaging, and provide a challenge
  • Create an environment of respect that is rooted in hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship, and supporting teammates
  • Communicate with athletes and parents
  • Ensure proper safety measures are observed when conducting team activities
  • Attend seasonal coaches' meetings
  • Give appropriate attention, care, and follow-up to student-athletes who are injured or ill, including filling out injury report forms
