How much do junior bioinformatics jobs pay per year?
What is a junior bioinformatics?
A Junior Bioinformatics job is an entry-level position that involves analyzing biological data using computational tools and techniques. Professionals in this role assist in tasks such as genome sequencing, protein structure analysis, and developing algorithms for biological research. They typically work in research institutions, biotech companies, or healthcare settings, collaborating with scientists and data analysts. Junior bioinformaticians are expected to have a background in biology, computer science, or a related field, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python or R. This role serves as a foundation for advancing into more specialized bioinformatics careers.
What does a junior bioinformatics do?
A typical day for a Junior Bioinformatics professional involves processing and analyzing biological data sets, using specialized software and coding scripts to interpret results. You’ll often collaborate closely with molecular biologists, data scientists, and other team members to support ongoing research projects. Tasks might include troubleshooting data pipelines, generating reports, and contributing to meetings that discuss research findings. The work environment is generally team-oriented and project-driven, offering opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues and gain hands-on experience with the latest technologies in genomics and data analysis.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior bioinformatics?
To thrive as a Junior Bioinformatics professional, you need a solid background in biology and computer science, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, Galaxy, R, and Python, as well as experience with databases like GenBank, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are important for translating complex data into actionable insights and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These competencies are critical for accurately analyzing biological data and contributing to research and development projects in life sciences.

Position description
Junior Specialist- Clelland Lab
Junior Specialist position is open for the Clelland Lab at the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. The goal of the Clelland lab is to develop novel therapies for neurodegenerative diseases including dementias and ALS. Projects are focused on basic mechanisms of disease and CRISPR gene editing in iPSCs, and iPSC-derived neurons, astrocytes and microglia. We work with our close collaborators at the UC Berkeley Innovative Genomics Institute. An exceptional candidate will design their own experiments, lead an aspect of a larger project independently, develop new ideas, be familiar with the literature, present at lab meetings, and participate in procurement of funds, where appropriate. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen. Applicants intending to progress to graduate or medical school are encouraged to apply.
Required Qualifications:
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Wet lab experience of at least 2 years
• Must have experience with iPSC cell modeling or CRISPR gene editing or advanced molecular biology
• Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
• Candidate's CV must state qualifications or if pending upon submission.
Preferred Qualifications:
• A background or research in bioinformatics or use of bioinformatic tools
Start dates flexible until the position is filled. We prefer a 2-year commitment.
