Job description

About the Job:

SpecialtyRx is seeking a Junior Automation Specialist - 2nd Shift to support the daily operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of pharmacy automation systems. This hands-on technical role will support equipment including Omnicell systems, DOSIS machines, TSort, packaging equipment, and other pharmacy automation technologies.

The Junior Automation Specialist will serve as a primary automation resource during second shift and work closely with the Senior Automation Specialist, Floor Manager, pharmacy leadership, machine technicians, vendors, and the Central Automation Team to keep equipment operational, efficient, and properly maintained.

The role will also support cassette maintenance and configuration, new medication implementation, preventive maintenance, and technician training.

Our Company:

SpecialtyRx is a Long-Term Care pharmacy providing pharmaceutical services to long-term care facilities and assisted living communities. Our pharmacy operations utilize advanced automation technology to support safe, accurate, and efficient medication fulfillment.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on support for Omnicell, DOSIS, TSort, packaging systems, and other pharmacy automation equipment.
  • Monitor equipment throughout the shift and respond to errors, jams, failures, and workflow interruptions.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and escalate complex problems to the appropriate internal team, vendor, or pharmacy leadership.
  • Follow established escalation procedures to minimize downtime and production disruption.
  • Assist with setup, testing, installation, and implementation of new automation equipment and technology.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify recurring issues or opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform cassette maintenance, including inspection, repair, component replacement, configuration, labeling, and organization.
  • Build and configure new medication cassettes and assist with testing and validation before production use.
  • Complete preventive maintenance and cleaning according to established schedules.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, tools, spare parts, and technical supplies.
  • Identify equipment showing signs of wear or declining performance and coordinate higher-level repairs or vendor service when needed.
  • Train newly hired pharmacy technicians on automation equipment, loading procedures, basic troubleshooting, safety, and equipment care.
  • Provide ongoing technical support and training when equipment, processes, or procedures change.
  • Reinforce standardized automation practices and discourage unauthorized workarounds or modifications.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, floor leadership, vendors, and the Central Automation Team to support efficient pharmacy operations.

Qualifications:

  • Pharmacy Technician registration/licensure as required by the applicable state.
  • Pharmacy technician experience required; Long-Term Care pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Experience with pharmacy automation equipment preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude.
  • Comfortable working with tools, mechanical components, cassettes, and automated dispensing equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to train employees and explain technical processes clearly.
  • Ability to work independently during second shift while recognizing when escalation is necessary.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn automation software, reporting systems, and equipment interfaces.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Omnicell Express or similar high-volume pharmacy automation.
  • Experience with DOSIS, TSort, packaging equipment, or other pharmacy automation systems.
  • Experience maintaining, repairing, configuring, or building medication cassettes.
  • Previous experience training pharmacy technicians.
  • Experience in a high-volume Long-Term Care, mail-order, central-fill, or closed-door pharmacy environment.

Schedule:

  • 2nd Shift.
  • Schedule based on pharmacy operational needs.
  • Ability to work independently and serve as a primary automation resource during second shift.

Reporting & Working Relationships:

The Junior Automation Specialist will work closely with the Senior Automation Specialist for technical direction, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, cassette management, new automation implementation, and escalation of complex issues.

The position will coordinate with the Floor Manager regarding daily workflow, staffing priorities, production needs, and operational expectations. This is a technical support and training role and is not the direct manager of pharmacy technicians. Employee supervision and performance management remain with the Floor Manager.

The Specialist will also collaborate with the Central Automation Team to maintain consistent and standardized automation practices across the SpecialtyRx network.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Group Life Insurance and Short-Term Disability.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid training and professional development opportunities.
