What is a junior attorney?

Junior attorneys are entry-level lawyers who have recently graduated from law school and passed the bar exam. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced attorneys, assisting with legal research, drafting documents, and supporting case preparation. Junior attorneys gain practical experience while developing their legal skills and understanding of various practice areas. Their responsibilities may vary depending on the size of the law firm or organization they work for.

What types of cases or matters does a junior attorney typically handle, and how much client interaction can I expect in this role?

As a Junior Attorney, you’ll often work on research, drafting legal documents, and supporting more senior attorneys on a variety of cases, which may include litigation, transactional matters, or regulatory compliance depending on the practice area. Client interaction is usually limited at first, focusing on behind-the-scenes tasks, but as you gain experience and demonstrate reliability, you may gradually take on more client-facing responsibilities such as attending meetings or depositions. This progression provides valuable exposure to different aspects of legal work while building foundational skills and professional confidence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, strong legal research and writing skills, and a license to practice law. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as case management software, is typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for building client relationships and collaborating with colleagues. These skills ensure the delivery of accurate legal advice, efficient case management, and successful teamwork in a legal environment.

What is the difference between Junior Attorney vs Paralegal?

Junior Attorneys are licensed lawyers with a JD who can perform legal work and represent clients, while Paralegals assist attorneys with research and document preparation without being licensed to practice law. Both roles work closely in legal settings, but Junior Attorneys have more responsibilities and legal authority.

Job description

Overview
The Reno, NV office of Lewis Brisbois, a full-service AmLaw 100 firm, is actively seeking an attorney to join its Labor & Employment Practice.
The ideal candidate will be admitted to practice in Nevada and have at least two (2) to fifteen (15) years of experience in employment law matters. Prior employment litigation experience is required (preferably on the management side), and employment counseling or in-house employment law experience is preferred. This is an excellent opportunity for attorneys who are proactive and passionate about assuming a high-level role providing legal service within a sophisticated practice and who are seeking to assume a significant role in all aspects of labor and employment law. This role requires extensive contact with clients, governmental agencies and opposing counsel.
Lewis Brisbois' Labor & Employment Practice represents clients from coast to coast in all phases and types of employment litigation, counseling, and training. Our team of employment professionals is spread throughout our locations across the United States and provides clients with sound counsel in dozens of jurisdictions. Our size and geographic coverage allow us to provide our clients with consistent representation throughout the nation.
Qualified candidates will be comfortable drafting and responding to discovery and initial pleadings, drafting, and arguing motions, as well as taking and defending depositions. Candidates must have strong writing and analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Although we would prefer that you have some experience in employment law, we are also interested in working with developing talented attorneys who come to us with excellent skills in any litigation arena. If you have substantive litigation experience, a demonstrated interest in labor and employment law, and are looking for an opportunity in a growing, collaborative firm, we invite you to apply.
We offer competitive compensation and in addition, Lewis Brisbois offers a range of benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and 401k with employer match.
