Job Description
Important Notice: Arlington County requires all applicants to thoroughly complete each section of the application, including prior job responsibilities, duties, and supplemental questions. The Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking temporary Summer Camp Counselor I's and II's, to support a variety of summer camp programs for youth ages 3-17. Adapted Camps support campers ages 5-21. Camper ages we support vary by each camp (see information below).
Staff must commit to our general core camp dates of June 22 - August 14. Please note the actual camp dates of operations vary depending on the camps (see information below). Additional weeks of camp, August 17 - August 28, may also be available (Therapeutic Recreation only). Training will begin in mid to late May through June, which includes virtual online courses, in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays. Several positions are available, and hours vary.

Responsibilities
The following Units & Camps are recruiting for General Camp Counselor positions:
EARLY CHILDHOOD CAMPS:
Little Explorers camp is a licensed half day preschool camp for ages 3-5. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to be hired for a licensed preschool camp. Staff will help support activities; including art, music, storytelling, outdoor games, and physical activities. This Unit operates 2 half-day summer camps that operate from June 22-August 14 from 9:30a.m. - 12:30p.m.
YOUTH TEENS AND FAMILY CAMPS:
Elementary Day Camps: High-energy, fun traditional day camps are designed around a creative weekly theme. Staff facilitate camp activities in active play through sports, cooperative games, and creative arts. These camps are for Rising Kindergarteners - Rising 5th graders, ages 5-10. Elementary camps run from June 29 - August 14 from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Tweens/Teens Day & Travel Camps: Designed to provide tweens/teens a fun, safe, challenging, and enriching environment where they learn to grow and play! Our full and half day camps provide a variety of activities based on a weekly theme that include sports, games, art, field trips, and teambuilding. These camps are for Rising 6th - 10th graders, ages 11-16. Full-day teen camps run from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and half-day teen camp run from 1:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and are offered June 29 - August 14.
THERAPUETIC RECREATION CAMPS:
  • Inclusion Support: Inclusion support services help campers with disabilities fully participate in camp activities. This includes providing individualized assistance, adapting activities, encouraging positive behaviors, and collaborating with staff to create an inclusive and engaging environment for all participants. Inclusion support is from June 22 - August 14th and camp hours may vary.
  • Adapted Camps: Engaging campers ages 6-21 with disabilities; adapted summer camps offer modified activities, specialized support, and an inclusive environment. These camps provide engaging experiences like arts, sports, swimming, and sensory activities while ensuring accessibility and individualized assistance for each participant. Adapted camps run from June 29 - August 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Inclusion support opportunities for any TR staff may be available during the additional weeks of camp August 17 - August 28. If you are interested and available to work these extra weeks, please indicate this in Question 8 of the supplemental questionnaire.
CREATIVE ARTS CAMPS:
Creative arts camps are enriching full day or half day camps where campers experiment with exciting art materials and techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and collage. Staff support by planning and leading a variety of art experiences for children ages 5-8 & 8-11 (depending on the camp). These camps run from June 29 - August 14 and are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (for full day camps) and 8:30a.m. - 12:00p.m. (for half day camp).
GYMNASTICS CAMP:
Gymnastics Camp is seeking Camp Recreation Assistants to support camp programs and instruct campers ages 6-9 years old in beginner-intermediate level gymnastics skills.
Gymnastics camp runs from June 22 - August 14 and is from 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m., working hours for camp are from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Staff must be able to commit to working at least the first half (June 22 - July17) or second half of camp (July 10-August 14).
NATURE AND HISTORY CAMPS: APPLICATIONS NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED FOR NATURE AND HISTORY CAMPS
Nature and History Camp is seeking temporary summer Camp Counselors to plan and lead a variety of nature experiences for campers ages 6 - 10 or 11 - 14. Daily camp activities mainly take place outside and include animal meet and greets, games, crafts, storytelling and physical activities like hiking, fishing, etc. This program operates outdoors for the full duration of the camp day (except during extreme weather conditions). Staff must commit to working from June 22 - August 14 (core camp dates). Additional weeks may be available. Hours vary depending on the camp.
Qualifications
Minimums:
SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR I - CAMP STAFF $15.30/Hour
Assisting with recreation activities, camp program operations, and behavior management of participants.
  • Less than a High School Diploma; plus
  • No experience is required.

SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR II - GROUP LEADER $16.32/Hour
Assisting with facilitation of recreation activities, behavior management of participants, and the management of camper's well-being during the program day.
  • Less than a High School Diploma; plus
  • Some experience working with youth or administering summer camp/recreation programs.

Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, reliable transportation, and effective communication skills, including the ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Working or volunteering in Summer Camp programs or Arlington Camps
  • Working in a recreation setting
  • Planning and leading recreational activities
  • Working with individuals with disabilities
  • Working with diverse populations.

Special Requirements
If selected, all summer staff may be required to:
  • Agree to a criminal background check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide references, which will be requested at time of interview.
  • Attend all required training, wear a uniform, and the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
  • Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for designated positions (generally SRA II & above)
  • Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.
