What is a Juke Joint?

A juke joint is an informal establishment in the southeastern United States, primarily operated by African Americans, that features live music, dancing, gambling, and drinking. Historically, juke joints emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as places where Black workers could socialize and enjoy blues music, away from the restrictions and segregation of mainstream society. They played a significant role in the development of blues and other forms of American music. Juke joints are known for their lively atmosphere, rustic settings, and cultural significance in the history of American music.
