Overview:
Due to the high number of applications we receive, we may not be able to respond to all applicants. Please note that this is a part-time, as needed position. If hired, the shop supervisor will add your name to a list and will reach out when there is work available.
Carpenter Responsibilities:
  • Construct scenery using industry techniques and materials.
  • Build and install scenic elements from construction drawings or designer drawings as directed.
  • Build and install scenic elements using safe and efficient techniques.
  • Participate in strike of scenic elements.
  • Implement basic safe rigging techniques for theater venues.
  • Work weekends and evenings as needed
  • Ability to work independently

Stage Operations Responsibilities:
  • Setup and install items for an array of programing, including but not limited to: dance floors, orchestra layouts, show decks, acoustic shells, and soft goods.
  • Under the guidance of the Stage Operations team, act as run crew for performances and events throughout the School.
  • Theater Maintenance
  • Venue and Operational Improvement Projects
  • Scenery Strikes/Load-ins
  • Any other duties deemed necessary for the efficient and professional execution of Juilliard programing.

Qualifications and Skills:
Required:
  • Previous experience as a stagehand or equivalent in a performance/theatrical setting.
  • Working knowledge of theatrical knots (e.g. clove hitch, bowline, trucker's hitch, etc.) and practices.
  • Ability to keep scheduled commitments.
  • Able to adapt quickly to changing priorities and timelines.
  • Expected to work within a theatrical team andmaintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Ability to adhere to rigging/flying safety protocols.
  • Must follow all health and safety guidelines deemed necessary by New York State, New York City, and The Juilliard School.
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, climb, and lift a reasonable amount within the standard expectations of the position.
  • Understanding of the mission of The Juilliard School as well as the School's commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Willingness to participate in Juilliard's inclusive policies and help promote a safe space.

Preferred:
  • Automation/Rigging knowledge a plus
  • Carpentry power tool knowledge a plus
