What is a jr developer?

Jr Developers, or Junior Developers, are entry-level professionals in the software development field. They typically have less experience than mid-level or senior developers and are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the guidance of more experienced team members. Jr Developers often work on smaller tasks, bug fixes, or simple features, and are expected to learn and grow their technical skills through mentorship and hands-on experience. Their role is essential for building a solid foundation in software development and contributing to the success of development projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a jr developer?

To thrive as a Jr Developer, you need a foundational understanding of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), basic software development principles, and often a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, IDEs, and workflow tools like Jira or Trello is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and eagerness to learn help Jr Developers stand out in the workplace. These abilities are crucial for efficiently contributing to team projects, adapting to new technologies, and growing within a dynamic development environment.

What are some common challenges a jr developer might face when joining a new team, and how can they overcome them?

As a Jr Developer, one of the most common challenges is adapting to unfamiliar codebases and workflows. It can be daunting to understand existing projects and navigate team-specific tools and processes. To overcome this, Jr Developers should proactively seek help from team members, take thorough notes, and dedicate time to reviewing documentation and code. Embracing code reviews and asking questions will not only accelerate learning but also help build relationships within the team.

The titles are frequently used interchangeably, but understanding the specific job description can clarify expectations.

How hard is it to get a junior developer job?

Securing a junior developer position typically requires foundational programming skills, a portfolio of projects, and familiarity with relevant tools like Git and common programming languages. Entry-level roles are often competitive, but candidates with relevant internships, certifications, or coding bootcamp experience have better chances of being hired.

How to get hired as a junior developer?

To get hired as a junior developer, build a strong foundation in programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, and create a portfolio of projects to demonstrate your skills. Gaining experience through internships, coding bootcamps, or contributing to open-source projects can improve your chances, along with obtaining relevant certifications and preparing for technical interviews.

Job description

Barrios Technology is an engineering solutions partner with more than 45 years of experience supporting NASA and the commercial space industry. We deliver innovative engineering, software, and technology integration services across NASA centers nationwide. Barrios prides itself on a people-focused culture that values creativity, diversity, professional growth, and a healthy work–life balance.

We are seeking a Software Developer to join our development team supporting software and infrastructure that enable mission operations and critical engineering workflows. This position focuses on supporting web applications, improving automation, and supporting CI/CD pipelines. You’ll help modernize systems, enhance developer tools, and support containerized services—making an immediate impact on teams across the Johnson Space Center.

The Software Developer will:

  • Enhance and maintain web-based applications across several tech stacks, with a .NET focus.
  • Help modernize legacy services by supporting containerization efforts (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automation scripts, and multi-language tooling
  • Support securityfocused practices including dependency scanning and SBOM generation
  • Conduct unit testing, participate in peer code reviews, and support automated testing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with engineers, participate in code reviews, and help improve internal developer workflows
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies (backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily standups, retrospectives).
  • Assist with technical documentation and user guidance for development tools

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a related field, plus zero (0) to five (5) years of experience.
  • Proficiency with C#, .NET (Framework/Core/8+), Git, and REST API fundamentals
  • Understanding of SQL and general software development practices
  • Ability to work in a securityminded environment with adherence to compliance requirements

Preferences:

  • Experience with Docker, container build tools, or containerized application development
  • Familiarity with GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps
  • Basic experience with cloud platforms (Azure or AWS)
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices or OWASP principles
  • Exposure to CI/CD scripting, automation workflows, or YAMLbased pipeline configuration

Essential Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Applicant selected may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally, an office environment but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
