Jr Developer information

What is a jr developer?

Jr Developers, or Junior Developers, are entry-level professionals in the software development field. They typically have less experience than mid-level or senior developers and are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the guidance of more experienced team members. Jr Developers often work on smaller tasks, bug fixes, or simple features, and are expected to learn and grow their technical skills through mentorship and hands-on experience. Their role is essential for building a solid foundation in software development and contributing to the success of development projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a jr developer?

To thrive as a Jr Developer, you need a foundational understanding of programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), basic software development principles, and often a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, IDEs, and workflow tools like Jira or Trello is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and eagerness to learn help Jr Developers stand out in the workplace. These abilities are crucial for efficiently contributing to team projects, adapting to new technologies, and growing within a dynamic development environment.

What are some common challenges a jr developer might face when joining a new team, and how can they overcome them?

As a Jr Developer, one of the most common challenges is adapting to unfamiliar codebases and workflows. It can be daunting to understand existing projects and navigate team-specific tools and processes. To overcome this, Jr Developers should proactively seek help from team members, take thorough notes, and dedicate time to reviewing documentation and code. Embracing code reviews and asking questions will not only accelerate learning but also help build relationships within the team.

What is the difference between Jr Developer vs Junior Software Engineer?

AspectJr DeveloperJunior Software Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically an associate degree or coding bootcamp certificationUsually a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, supervised tasks, learning-focusedSimilar entry-level environment, often with more complex project involvement
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech companies, startups, and IT departmentsUsed interchangeably in many companies, especially in software development teams
Search & Comparison IntentYes, often compared for entry-level rolesYes, often searched as a more formal or technical title

While both roles are entry-level software development positions, a Jr Developer often emphasizes basic coding tasks and learning, whereas a Junior Software Engineer may involve more structured engineering responsibilities. The titles are frequently used interchangeably, but understanding the specific job description can clarify expectations.

How hard is it to get a junior developer job?

Securing a junior developer position typically requires foundational programming skills, a portfolio of projects, and familiarity with relevant tools like Git and common programming languages. Entry-level roles are often competitive, but candidates with relevant internships, certifications, or coding bootcamp experience have better chances of being hired.

How to get hired as a junior developer?

To get hired as a junior developer, build a strong foundation in programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, and create a portfolio of projects to demonstrate your skills. Gaining experience through internships, coding bootcamps, or contributing to open-source projects can improve your chances, along with obtaining relevant certifications and preparing for technical interviews.

OceanMD

Toronto, ON โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

Join us as we change healthcare for the better.

OceanMD, a WELL Health Company, is the leading provider of EMR-integrated Patient Engagement and eReferral tools in Canada, playing a critical role in millions of patient visits and thousands of referrals every week. Our digital healthcare solutions empower patients and physicians to overcome the barriers preventing the timely delivery of healthcare services. By replacing paper forms with digital tools, we give patients and providers secure ways to connect, share health information, and update patient records. Our tools:

  • Empower patients to share health information with their physician before, during, and after visits, helping to ensure health records are up-to-date and accurate while improving patient care.
  • Meet the growing demand for digital solutions with online booking and secure messaging that improves the patient’s experience, reduces the need for unnecessary phone calls, and makes clinics more efficient.
  • Improve access to care by replacing faxes, displaying wait times, and reducing the time to process and access specialist referrals.

Who we need

Reporting to the Vice President, Research and Development, we are hiring a Software Developer. As our new Software Developer, you will build and enhance the health technology that helps physicians and patients connect more efficiently, with a particular focus on patient engagement and eReferral solutions. Working as part of a collaborative, high-trust development team, you will contribute throughout the software development lifecycle - from sprint planning and solution design to implementation, code review, and delivery - while helping shape thoughtful, scalable solutions that directly support better healthcare experiences across Canada. Working within a structured three-week sprint cycle, you will collaborate closely with product managers and fellow developers to deliver reliable, high-quality software while contributing ideas that strengthen both the product and the team. Success in this role means more than writing great code; it means contributing to the team's shared technical direction, supporting your teammates, and continuously learning as you help advance OceanMD's mission.

This is a full-time hybrid role based in Toronto, with an expectation of working in the office three days per week, supported by a high-trust, flexible approach to hybrid work.

What’s in it for you

Purpose. You want your work to have a meaningful impact beyond the code you write. Every feature you build contributes to improving how patients access care and how healthcare providers connect, communicate, and share information. Your work will help power technology used in millions of patient interactions across Canada, supporting faster referrals, better patient engagement, and a more connected healthcare system.

A collaborative engineering culture. You will join a close-knit team that values curiosity, trust, and shared success over individual heroics. Developers work together to solve problems, review each other's code, and step in to help teammates overcome challenges. You'll have the opportunity to contribute ideas, influence technical decisions, and learn from experienced developers who are invested in helping each other grow. Monthly learning days provide dedicated time to explore new technologies, experiment with ideas, and share knowledge with the wider team.

Growth and ownership. You won't be limited to implementing tickets. You'll contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, from shaping technical approaches with product managers to delivering production-ready features. As you demonstrate your capabilities, you'll earn greater ownership over increasingly complex initiatives, not through titles alone, but through trust, autonomy, and opportunities to lead larger technical challenges. If you're motivated by becoming a stronger engineer, you'll find an environment that actively invests in your growth through mentorship, monthly learning days, and personalized development plans.

How you will make an impact

  • Build software that improves access to healthcare. You will design, develop, and enhance features that support OceanMD's patient engagement and eReferral platform, creating secure, reliable, and scalable solutions that help patients and healthcare providers connect more effectively. Working across the software development lifecycle, you will contribute from design through implementation and delivery, helping advance technology used in millions of patient interactions across Canada.
  • Collaborate to deliver high-quality solutions. You will work within three-week Agile sprints, partnering with developers and product managers to turn priorities into well-designed, thoughtfully implemented features. You will actively participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, code reviews, and testing, helping maintain the high quality and reliability of our platform while putting team success ahead of individual tasks by helping teammates overcome blockers and sharing responsibility for every sprint commitment.
  • Contribute to technical decisions. You will do more than implement requirements. Working with product managers and fellow developers, you will help shape technical approaches, contribute ideas during sprint planning, participate in collaborative solution design, and refine ideas through discussion and feedback. You'll be encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions constructively, and help improve the architecture, performance, and maintainability of the platform.
  • Learn, experiment, and share knowledge. You'll have dedicated monthly learning days to explore technologies, investigate new ideas, or build projects that interest you. Rather than treating learning as an individual activity, you'll share what you've discovered with the wider team, helping everyone continuously improve while expanding your own technical expertise.

What you bring

  • The development experience. You have experience building and delivering software in a collaborative product environment, contributing across the software development lifecycle from design through implementation, testing, and release. You are comfortable taking ownership of your work, solving problems independently, and collaborating with others to deliver high-quality solutions. Experience building SaaS products or healthcare technology is valuable, but we're equally interested in developers who have built strong engineering fundamentals in other product environments and enjoy learning new technologies.
  • The technical foundation. You have strong object-oriented programming fundamentals and experience building modern web applications. While experience with Java, Spring, JavaScript, Vue.js, or MongoDB is valuable, you're able to explain the concepts behind the technologies you've used and apply those principles in unfamiliar environments. You care about writing maintainable code, participating in thoughtful code reviews, and building reliable software. Experience using AI-assisted development tools is welcome, but you're confident relying on your engineering fundamentals, not AI, to solve complex technical problems.
  • The collaborative approach. You genuinely believe the success of the team comes before individual accomplishments. You're quick to help teammates when they're stuck, comfortable asking for help yourself, and enjoy solving problems together rather than independently. You welcome feedback, contribute ideas during design discussions, and understand that the strongest solutions are built collaboratively.
  • The mindset. You're naturally curious and motivated by continuous improvement. Rather than relying on familiar approaches, you're excited to explore new technologies, investigate better ways of solving problems, and share what you've learned with others. Most importantly, you're motivated by building technology that improves healthcare and want your work to have a meaningful impact on patients and providers across Canada.

Nice to have
Experience with healthcare technology, electronic medical records (EMRs), Vue.js, Spring, MongoDB, or AI-assisted development tools is an asset, but not required. We're far more interested in your curiosity, collaborative approach, and strong engineering fundamentals than whether you've worked with every technology in our stack.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $90,000–$110,000 CAD. Compensation will be determined based on your experience, skills, qualifications, and the needs of the organization. At OceanMD, we are committed to fair and equitable compensation and aim to provide a competitive salary that reflects the value and expertise you bring to the team.

What you can expect from our hiring process:

  • A virtual interview with a Talent Advisor to discuss your interest in the role and your experience. The conversation will be recorded using BrightHire, an AI-powered video interview tool. More details will be shared when you are invited to interview.
  • An in-person technical panel interview with 2–3 senior members of the Engineering team. This conversation will focus on your technical experience, approach to software development, problem-solving, and how you collaborate with others to design and build high-quality software.
  • A final interview with senior cross-functional leaders focused on cultural alignment, your interest in OceanMD's mission, and how you would contribute to the team and the organization.
