What is a journeyman toolmaker?

Journeyman Toolmakers are skilled tradespeople who design, build, modify, and repair precision tools, dies, molds, and specialized equipment used in manufacturing. They typically have completed an apprenticeship program and have several years of hands-on experience. Their work involves reading blueprints, using computer-aided design (CAD) software, operating machine tools, and ensuring that tools meet exact specifications. Journeyman Toolmakers play a critical role in ensuring the quality and efficiency of production processes. They often work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a journeyman toolmaker?

To thrive as a Journeyman Toolmaker, you need expertise in precision machining, blueprint reading, and tool and die fabrication, typically supported by completion of an apprenticeship or technical training. Proficiency with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and precision measuring instruments is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you excel in this role. These skills ensure the accurate production and maintenance of complex tools, which are crucial for manufacturing efficiency and product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by journeyman toolmakers when working on custom tooling projects?

Journeyman Toolmakers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex blueprints, working with tight tolerances, and adapting to last-minute design changes. Precision and attention to detail are crucial, as even minor errors can affect production quality. Collaboration with engineers, machinists, and production teams is essential to troubleshoot issues and ensure tooling meets specifications. Staying current with new materials and evolving manufacturing technologies also helps overcome these challenges.

What is the difference between Journeyman Toolmaker vs Machinist?

AspectJourneyman ToolmakerMachinist
CredentialsApprenticeship, journeyman certificationHigh school diploma, technical training
Work EnvironmentTool shops, manufacturing plantsMachine shops, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageTool and die, manufacturingGeneral manufacturing, metalworking

While both roles involve machining skills, a Journeyman Toolmaker specializes in designing, building, and repairing precision tools and dies, often requiring specialized certifications. A Machinist operates machine tools to produce parts, focusing on general metalworking tasks. The two roles share technical skills but differ in scope and specialization within manufacturing environments.

Do journeyman toolmakers make good money?

Journeyman toolmakers typically earn competitive wages that vary by region and industry, with median salaries often ranging from $50,000 to $70,000 annually. Their earnings can increase with experience, specialized skills, and certifications, especially when working in manufacturing or industrial environments that require precision machining and tool fabrication.

Is a journeyman toolmaker well paid?

A journeyman toolmaker typically earns a competitive wage that reflects their skilled craftsmanship and experience. Salaries can vary based on location, industry, and certifications, but they generally offer good compensation compared to entry-level manufacturing roles.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY AS OUR TOOLMAKER:

You'll typically work from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Your main focus will be on accurately building, repairing, and maintaining precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and specialized manufacturing equipment. You'll read and follow blueprints, engineering drawings, CAD models, and machining specifications to produce highly precise parts that meet tight tolerances. Since you'll often be working independently, precision, efficiency, and troubleshooting skills are vital. As you work, you'll maintain accurate records and set-up sheets.

You'll be responsible for properly setting up the CNC and manual machining equipment (lathes, grinders, hand tools, etc.) before accurately producing, assembling, and finishing the tools. When the tools are ready, you'll inspect the finished products with precision measurement devices (micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.) to ensure quality and dimensional accuracy. You'll also diagnose issues with tools and perform the correct repairs to get them production-ready. We're always aiming to improve and do better, and you'll play a part in that by determining the most efficient machining sequences, performing root-cause analysis on issues, and supporting improved tooling and manufacturing processes.

Toolmaker Requirements:

  • Experience working with CAD drawings
  • Experience using precision measurement tools
  • Strong proficiency in CNC and manual machining
  • Mechanical aptitude with an understanding of mechanical relationships, tolerances, and fits
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • High levels of accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail
  • Ability to clearly communicate with engineers, machinists, and production teams
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., perform repetitive tasks with few breaks, and follow all safety protocols
  • Preferred - CAM programming experience
  • Preferred - completion of a tool and die apprenticeship, a journeyman certification, or equivalent experience
  • Preferred - 3+ years of experience in a tool room or precision machining environment
