Job Title: System Administrator

Also referred to as:  IT Systems Administrator, Technical Support Engineer (Tier III), IT Operations Engineer   

Location: Charlotte, On-site 
Job Type: Full-time 



SUMMARY: The System Administrator is a senior-level technical role responsible for leading advanced IT operations, infrastructure management, and strategic technology initiatives across the organization. This position builds upon the foundational and intermediate responsibilities of Tech I and II roles, with a focus on systems architecture, automation, security, and cross-departmental collaboration. 


The System Administrator will serve as a technical mentor, project lead, and subject matter expert, ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of IT systems while supporting organizational growth and innovation. Furthermore, like Tech I and II roles, this role remains a front-facing role for technical support of all PAA staff.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities

Advanced System & Infrastructure Management

  • Identify and/or design, implement, and maintain scalable infrastructure solutions across on-premises and cloud environments (Hardware refresh cycles, Windows Server, Azure, Hyper-V, Unraid).
  • Automate system deployments, patching, and monitoring using scripting tools (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) or remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools, and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit.
  • Lead refresh cycles and additional hardware planning/research, server and network performance tuning, capacity planning, and disaster recovery strategies.

Cloud & Identity Management

  • Manage and optimize Microsoft 365 and Azure AD environments, including licensing, conditional Access, Identity Protection, and compliance configurations.
  • Integrate cloud services with on-premises systems and support hybrid identity solutions.

Security & Compliance

  • Lead security initiatives including endpoint protection, encryption, vulnerability management, and HIPAA compliance and end user asset ownership audits.
  • Develop and enforce IT security policies and procedures in collaboration with leadership.

Project Leadership

  • Plan and lead IT projects such as system upgrades and refresh cycles, migrations, and new technology rollouts.
  • Coordinate with vendors, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to ensure timely and successful project delivery.

Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing

  • Mentor and support Tech I and II staff through training, documentation, and technical guidance.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs, technical documentation, and knowledge base articles.

Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Identify inefficiencies in IT operations and implement automation or process enhancements.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and make recommendations for adoption.

Advanced Support & Escalation

  • Serve as the final escalation point for complex technical issues.
  • Provide expert-level troubleshooting across systems, networks, and applications and verbally express the solution when appropriate.

Additional Duties:

  • Provide coverage for IT leadership or colleagues during periods of PTO or illness.
  • Occasional travel to satellite locations to meet with stakeholders for asset handoffs and/or troubleshooting.
  • Responsible for device wiping, secure disposal, and final disposition.
  • Maintain rapport and trust of PAA staff

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent training. A combination of education and relevant work experience may also be considered. 


Experience: 5+ years in IT operations or systems administration, with demonstrated progression in responsibilities and technical expertise, preferably in a healthcare setting.


License/Certification: Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, CompTIA Security+, MCSA/MCSE, Jamf 300+, etc., or equivalent training and/or experience is preferred.


Language Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders, including end users. Strong leadership abilities and proficiency in creating clear, thorough documentation.


Computer Skills: Requires a deep understanding of Windows Server, Active Directory, Azure, Microsoft 365, ticketing systems, and remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools. Must have experience with virtualization (Hyper-V), networking, and security best practices, as well as proficiency in both Windows and macOS environments. Strong skills in Microsoft Outlook and Word are essential, with additional proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel.


Reasoning Ability: Strong ability to organize and manage personal workload while maintaining a focus on process improvement to identify inefficiencies and implement solutions that support business growth and system/network optimization. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Travel is primarily local during the day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel for conferences may be required. Air travel may also be required.
