What does a Job Planner do?

A Job Planner is responsible for organizing, scheduling, and coordinating the various tasks required to complete a project efficiently. They analyze project requirements, allocate resources, create timelines, and ensure that each phase of the project progresses smoothly. Job Planners work closely with project managers, supervisors, and other team members to ensure deadlines are met and potential issues are identified early. Their role is crucial for maximizing productivity, optimizing resource use, and minimizing project delays.

What are some typical challenges a Job Planner faces when coordinating multiple projects simultaneously?

Job Planners often manage several projects at once, which can make prioritization and time management challenging. Balancing the needs and deadlines of different teams requires strong organizational skills and clear communication. It's common to encounter shifting project scopes or unexpected delays, so adaptability and proactive problem-solving are essential. Regular collaboration with project managers, engineers, and vendors helps ensure that schedules stay on track and resources are allocated efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Job Planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Job Planner, you need strong organizational, scheduling, and project management skills, often supported by a background in engineering or construction and relevant certifications. Familiarity with scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, and ERP systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for collaborating across teams and adapting to project changes. These abilities help ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications.

Job description

Req ID:521413

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

With several strategic projects underway and upcoming, we are seeking an Engineering Planner to join our team based in Saint-Bruno (Quebec).

In this key role, you will contribute to the planning and monitoring of development activities within the engineering office, ensuring coordination and alignment of timelines in a complex, multidisciplinary project environment within a multinational organization.

Your Future Role

In this high-impact role, you will work closely with engineering teams and project planners to ensure milestones are met and to maintain visibility on activities related to the product development lifecycle (design, build, deployment, validation).

You will also play an important role in identifying risks, coordinating schedules, and driving continuous improvement of planning practices.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, schedule, and manage development activities for one or more engineering disciplines using JIRA
  • Create and maintain project schedules
  • Identify risks and issues related to activity sequencing, workload, or team capacity
  • Contribute to resolving planning challenges by proposing different scenarios
  • Communicate progress updates and next steps to relevant stakeholders
  • Support risk management for the disciplines under your responsibility
  • Participate in planning governance and performance tracking (KPIs, visual management, action plans, follow-up meetings, etc.)
  • Collaborate closely with project planners to ensure effective coordination
Your profile
  • Academic background in engineering (preferred)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Fluency in French and English (spoken and written)
  • Experience or knowledge of the railway product development lifecycle
  • Familiarity with planning tools, ideally JIRA

You don't need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you'll be proud. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you!
