Job description

Summary for Port Engineer

The Port Engineer is responsible for the oversight of the shoreside engineering team and the Allen Marine Tours fleet of vessels. The Port Engineer manages all maintenance and repairs of vessel equipment and machinery. The successful candidate will create and implement a preventative maintenance system, along with managing engineers to ensure all maintenance and repairs are being carried out on the vessels throughout the year.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Port Engineer

  • Arrive one and a half hours before tour departures to consult with crew to resolve mechanical issues.
  • Be present for initial vessel startups to provide troubleshooting before tour departures.
  • Supervise Assistant Port Engineer and Deckhands, monitor engine logs for each vessel, and maintain independent logs on all work completed.
  • Complete required maintenance on a prescribed schedule and assist with oil/fuel filter changes as needed.
  • Conduct pre-season and continuous onboard training with Deckhands.
  • Diagnose and complete repairs on time.
  • Order, receive, and maintain a complete inventory of spare parts for engines and auxiliary systems.
  • Maintain docks, ramp, shop, and all other aspects of the facility, including septic and fuel systems.
  • Work cooperatively with mechanics and welders from other AMT ports and outside businesses as needed.
  • Ride along on tours as needed to assess and monitor vessel systems while underway by conducting engine and jet room checks.
  • Fill in onboard as Deckhand/crew as needed.
  • Work efficiently with Captains and other employees in a time-critical environment.
  • Special projects may be assigned as required by the business.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) for Port Engineer

  • High degree of organization.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in any maritime-related field.
  • High School Degree or equivalent
  • Extensive marine-diesel/auxiliary systems knowledge.
  • Experience creating and executing a maintenance and repair schedule.
  • Valid US driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.

Preferred Qualifications for Port Engineer

  • Knowledge of specialized systems – impellers, raw water systems, water jets, etc.
  • Experience in tourism or tour-related industry.
  • Post-secondary mechanical engineering certificate.

Environmental Conditions for Port Engineer

  • Include moderate to loud noise levels, all weather conditions, frequent use of required protective clothing including raingear, ear protection and life preserver.

  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk on uneven deck surfaces crossing from vessel to vessel.
  • Must be able to fit through a 36” hatch. Environments can be hot, cold, dusty, and noisy.
  • Ability to stand, bend, twist, and complete repetitive movements for long periods. Ability to perform physical work for 8-12 hours at a time.
