What is JDRF and what does it do?

JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research and advocacy for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Its mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. JDRF supports research initiatives, provides community support, and works to influence policy to improve the lives of people affected by T1D.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) staff member, and why are they important?

To thrive as a staff member at JDRF, you generally need experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, and/or diabetes advocacy, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with donor management systems (like Salesforce), event planning software, and social media platforms is typically required. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills help build relationships with donors, volunteers, and the diabetes community. These skills are crucial for advancing JDRF’s mission to fund research and support those affected by type 1 diabetes.

What jobs are type 1 diabetics not allowed to do?

Type 1 diabetics can generally perform most jobs, but they may face restrictions in roles involving high risk of hypoglycemia, such as certain jobs in aviation, commercial diving, or jobs requiring strict physical safety standards. Employers may need to accommodate their condition, including access to medication and monitoring devices, especially in safety-sensitive environments.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working at JDRF, and how can they prepare for them?

Employees at JDRF often work in fast-paced, mission-driven environments where priorities can shift quickly due to the evolving landscape of research and fundraising. A common challenge is balancing multiple projects, such as organizing events, supporting research initiatives, and engaging with donors or volunteers. To prepare, candidates should develop strong organizational and communication skills, as collaboration across departments is frequent. Flexibility, resilience, and a passion for JDRF's mission are key to thriving in this dynamic nonprofit setting.
