For over 40 years, Living Jazz has been dedicated to producing unique, accessible music education and performance programs that: Empower children and adults | Inspire creative growth | Unite diverse communities

Living Jazz is a beloved Bay Area Institution. Since 1984, Living Jazz has designed and produced a multitude of programs that have literally helped shape the Bay Area's music scene and beyond. Living Jazz's flagship program, Jazz Camp West, brings together intergenerational communities, learning, and jazz mastery in the California redwoods. Jam Camp West is a 7-day music and vocal program for 10-17 year olds that welcomes children of all skill levels and backgrounds. RootED serves TK - 12 grade students in the East Bay through music and dance education with a social justice focus. Living Jazz is also the producer of "In the Name of Love" - the Annual MLK Musical Tribute in Oakland.

Living Jazz's Board is composed of a dedicated group of experienced professionals in myriad fields who are deeply committed to our purpose. Each member of the Board accepts the responsibility to uphold the mission and advance the legacy of Living Jazz by actively participating in the work of the Board, setting policy, ensuring its financial stability, charting its course into the future...and celebrating the joy of jazz!

We are looking for for passionate individuals to join the 17 person Board of Living Jazz and help usher in the next 40 years of jazz-rooted music education and performance program. Ideal candidates will bring their expertise, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives to help us drive our mission forward.

Board members have the opportunity to shape the strategic direction of our organization, support music education and performance programs, and collaborate with other dedicated leaders to enhance our fundraising and community engagement efforts.

About Board Service:

  • Board terms are two years; there is no term limit for renewal of terms.
  • Board meetings occur ~6 times a year, every other month in Oakland, CA (3 in person, 3 virtual)
  • We ask for a board pledge of at least $1,500, and that you make Living Jazz one of your top 3 charitable giving priorities and make an annual donation of personal significance.
  • You'll serve on a choice of at least one board committee, typically meeting every 1-2 months.
  • The board commits to:
    • regular attendance at events (live and virtual).
    • regular promotion of our work to your networks.
    • Support and amplifying of fundraising campaigns.
    • contribute personal skills/professional expertise.
