What does a Java Software Development Engineer in Test do?

A Java Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated test frameworks and scripts using Java. SDETs work closely with developers and QA teams to ensure the quality and reliability of software applications by writing code that tests other code. They also help identify bugs, create test plans, and contribute to continuous integration and deployment processes. SDETs play a key role in improving software quality and speeding up release cycles through automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java Software Development Engineer in Test?

To thrive as a Java Software Development Engineer In Test, you need strong programming skills in Java, a solid understanding of software testing principles, and experience with automated testing frameworks, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, TestNG, JUnit, CI/CD systems, and source control platforms such as Git is typically required, along with knowledge of API testing and scripting. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software by enabling thorough, efficient, and automated testing processes.

How does a Java Software Development Engineer in Test typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

A Java SDET works closely with both developers and QA teams to ensure software quality from the earliest stages of development. They participate in sprint planning, help define acceptance criteria, and design automated test frameworks that integrate smoothly with the development pipeline. Collaboration often involves reviewing code, sharing test results in real time, and troubleshooting issues together to accelerate the feedback loop. This hands-on involvement helps catch defects early and supports a culture of continuous integration and delivery.

What is the difference between Java Software Development Engineer In Test vs Java QA Engineer?

AspectJava Software Development Engineer In TestJava QA Engineer

Job description

We are seeking a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to develop and maintain automated testing solutions for complex web-based applications. This role will be primarily focused on test automation, with limited manual testing as needed, and will work closely with developers, QA engineers, and business stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience building and maintaining automation frameworks, testing APIs and integrations, incorporating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshooting test failures. Experience using AI-assisted development/testing tools such as GitHub Copilot is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and execute automated test suites for web applications, APIs, integrations, and critical end-to-end business workflows.
  • Build and enhance scalable automation frameworks using modern testing tools and programming/scripting languages.
  • Create automated unit, integration, API, regression, smoke, and end-to-end tests based on application risk and testing strategy.
  • Apply automation design patterns such as Page Object Model (POM) and reusable component-based approaches.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to provide fast feedback throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot flaky or failing automated tests by identifying root causes related to application code, test data, environments, timing, or test design.
  • Perform API testing to validate contracts, functionality, integrations, security, error handling, and data accuracy.
  • Implement automated accessibility testing and validate applications against WCAG guidelines.
  • Use mocks, stubs, fakes, and other testing techniques to isolate dependencies and improve test reliability.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development and testing tools, including GitHub Copilot, to improve test creation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overall QA efficiency.
  • Test AI/LLM-enabled application functionality, including expected behavior, edge cases, error handling, and response quality where applicable.
  • Perform limited manual, exploratory, and regression testing when appropriate.
  • Identify, reproduce, document, and track defects through resolution.
  • Collaborate with developers, product teams, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and ensure appropriate test coverage.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, code reviews, release planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 2+ years of professional QA automation, SDET, or software testing experience.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining automated tests for web-based applications.
  • Experience with modern UI automation tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, MABL, or similar.
  • Programming or scripting experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Python, or similar languages.
  • Understanding of automation framework design and common design patterns such as Page Object Model.
  • Experience with API testing using Postman, REST APIs, or similar tools.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of Git/version control and modern development workflows.
  • Experience troubleshooting test failures, flaky tests, test data issues, and environment-related problems.
  • Understanding of unit, integration, API, and end-to-end testing strategies and when each should be used.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database/data validation.
  • Experience with Jira or similar defect/test management tools.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Associate or bachelor''s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience using GitHub Copilot or other AI-assisted development/testing tools.
  • Experience testing AI/LLM-enabled applications or features.
  • Familiarity with MCP (Model Context Protocol), agentic AI workflows, or AI-driven testing tools.
  • Experience with accessibility testing, WCAG guidelines, and tools such as axe-core.
  • Knowledge of mocks, stubs, fakes, test isolation, and test-data management.
  • Experience with performance testing concepts and tools.
  • Experience working in AWS or other cloud-based environments.
  • .NET application/environment experience.
