This position reports to:
Product Engineering Manager - Development & Localization
Your role and responsibilities
The Metal Specialist will oversee the strategic localization of current and new metal parts and mechanisms across North America. This role requires close coordination with local functions, R&D competence centers, Agile development teams, and ABB manufacturing facilities and suppliers to ensure successful implementation and production readiness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Documentation & Specifications
  • Develop clear and comprehensive parts specifications, technical drawings, and detailed requirements
  • Create and execute test plans in collaboration with R&D to validate metal parts and mechanisms performance
  • Ensure all technical and ERP system parameters are accurately updated and maintained throughout the product lifecycle

Supplier Development & Coordination
  • Lead coordination efforts with local functions and suppliers for the development and localization of metal parts in North America
  • Support production ramp-up activities at local supplier facilities
  • Manage supplier relationships to ensure quality, delivery, and cost objectives are met

Tooling Design & Lifecycle Management
  • Design, develop, and maintain metal tooling including dies, molds, fixtures, and jigs to meet production and quality requirements
  • Oversee the complete tool lifecycle from design review through fabrication, testing, and validation
  • Ensure all tooling meets specifications for durability, precision, and manufacturability
  • Track and manage tooling CAPEX investments and maintain accurate asset tracking systems

Quality Assurance & Process Improvement
  • Support the Quality Department in conducting inspections, measurements, and validation tests on new or modified tools
  • Collaborate with Quality and Engineering teams to identify and resolve nonconformities or process deviations
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and manufacturing efficiency

Operations Support
  • Provide technical support for day-to-day shop floor operations related to metallic components
  • Troubleshoot production issues and implement corrective actions
  • Work cross-functionally to optimize manufacturing processes and improve operational efficiency

Qualifications for the role
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electromechanical, Industrial, or similar)
  • 5 years of experience in manufacturing processes, assembly and metal parts fabrication is desirable
  • Proven proficiency on projects management
  • Strong skills on technical specifications and drawing interpretation
  • Proven experience on tolerance and reliability analysis
  • Strong knowledge on reliability and endurance testing
  • Knowledge on metal parts fabrication, welding and bracing process and mechanisms assembly and evaluation
  • Strong knowledge and experience on new vendors evaluation and approval
  • Basic knowledge on painting and coated systems application, evaluation, and testing
  • Willing to travel up to 15% of the time

  • Resilience and capacity to work under stressful conditions (emotional intelligence)
