Job description

Position description
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, defending, and empowering public-interest journalism, is hiring a 25-hour-per-week IT support specialist to support our staff and give our six-person infrastructure team more capacity for project work. This hybrid role will be primarily remote, with up to two days a week on-site at our office in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood for on-the-ground IT coverage. The schedule requires standard overlap with U.S. Eastern Time core business hours.
Reporting to the engineering manager for infrastructure, this position will work side by side with our IT/infrastructure engineer to provide front-line technical support for the entire organization of about 50 people, and will take on scoped projects delegated by other members of the infrastructure team as capacity allows.
Responsibilities
  • Front-line response for IT support tickets and requests in our mixed Mac/Linux environment, helping close the gap between incoming requests and available coverage
  • Onboarding, offboarding, hardware setup, and asset management in close coordination with our IT/infrastructure engineer
  • Provide in-office coverage at our DUMBO location, including backup support when our IT/infrastructure engineer is unavailable or more support is needed for in-person events
  • Maintain documentation systems as changes in access, asset management, and environment occur
  • Support access management and perform account provisioning/deprovisioning
  • Take on scoped projects or tasks, such as workflow automation or implementing new tools and services, with mentorship from senior infrastructure team members
  • Help monitor and triage CVEs and alerts that affect our infrastructure, escalating appropriately
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the engineering manager for infrastructure
Qualifications
Required
  • One-plus year(s) in IT providing technical support in an engineering/highly technical environment, with strong customer service skills (finds real satisfaction in helping people, even those having a tough day!)
  • Experience with ticketing systems and managing a growing support queue, and knowing when to escalate
  • Experience in access management, user authentication, and authorization processes
  • Comfort in a terminal with knowledge of basic shell commands
  • Comfort working in a mixed Linux and Mac environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical audiences
  • A passion for the First Amendment, transparency, and protecting the rights of journalists and whistleblowers
Preferred
  • Interest in or exposure to GPG, Git, SSH, networking, basic Python and shell scripting
  • Familiarity with onboarding/offboarding processes and asset tracking platforms
  • Experience with Google Workspace administration
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools like Pingdom and Icinga
  • Familiarity with GitHub
  • Prior work experience in nonprofit, journalism, or civil society settings
Working with us
This is a part-time nonexempt role that will pay $35/hour for approximately 25 hours of work per week, with a schedule to be determined in consultation with the hiring manager.
