Job Description
The IT Network Engineer, Senior is primarily responsible for the design, implementation and support of enterprise network infrastructure utilized by Lurie Children's Hospital. This includes routers, switches, and relevant network appliances and technology for transport of data and voice services within the Lurie Children's campus and the Internet. The IT Network Engineer, Senior is expected to be self-directed and perform responsibilities with minimal supervision. Additionally, this position is expected to mentor more junior staff, i.e. the IT Network Engineer. This position performs tasks in association with IM Application and Infrastructure Teams. Duties may be performed directly or coordinated with external technology and/or service partners. This position requires the individual to have a master level understanding of all assigned network, and application technologies and to assume responsibility for the successful completion of complex project tasks.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Develops and manages complex projects related to the network infrastructure and related technologies.
  • Mentors and develops the network technology skills of junior staff.
  • Establishes and maintains network infrastructure roadmaps and technology standards
  • Implements and maintains Juniper/Cisco and other network vendor technologies.
  • Maintains wired and wireless network equipment and software.
  • Performs network troubleshooting and analysis utilizing packets sniffers and other inspection tools
  • Works with the Information Security and Compliance Teams for policy and design needs related to network infrastructure security.
  • Develops and maintains data cable, network rooms, and other physical elements of the network infrastructure.
  • Participate in other department or organizational project tasks as required.
  • Completes assigned Service Desk support tickets within IM Department standards
  • Serves as liaison to vendors for equipment and software maintenance
  • Develops and documents procedures covering all aspects of enterprise-wide network infrastructure
  • Monitors and reports on performance for all enterprise network infrastructure and technologies.
  • Performs ongoing capacity and performance planning for enterprise network infrastructure and related technologies.
  • Assumes on-call responsibility for network infrastructure, per the schedule.
  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Network Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of network hardware and infrastructure required, including experience working with application transport, infrastructure devices, and monitoring both network analytical and diagnostic tools.
  • Extensive Knowledge of networking protocols such as: OSPF, BGP, 802.1x, 802.11, DHCP, and DNS
  • Master level experience with TCP/IP and OSI model, along with LAN, WAN, and Wireless networks
  • Comprehensive knowledge of systems and technologies as they relate to the network infrastructure.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with Juniper/Cisco technologies, in a complex enterprise network environment.
  • 3-5 years of experience with wireless network technologies highly desired.
  • 3-5years working with cable management and standards for IDF and Data Centers.
  • Certification in Juniper, Cisco, and other networking technology highly desired.
  • Demonstrated project management skills from both team member and leader roles.
  • Programming or scripting skills necessary to assist in network administrative management tasks highly desired.
  • Adapt to new and emerging tech, implementing necessary associated upgrades to our network when required.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the capability to work across departments and directly with clients as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills, a troubleshooting genius, and an unparalleled attention to detail.
  • Excellent time and project management skills, customer service and interpersonal skills, system diagnostic and communication (written and oral) are critical for success in this position.
