What does an IT helper do?

An IT Helper assists with basic technical support tasks in an organization, such as setting up computers, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and providing general assistance to users. They often help maintain computer systems, install updates, and ensure that equipment is running smoothly. IT Helpers are typically the first point of contact for employees experiencing technical difficulties and may escalate more complex problems to senior IT staff. Their role is essential in keeping everyday technology operations running efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Helper, you need a foundational understanding of computer hardware, software troubleshooting, and basic networking, often supported by a relevant diploma or certifications like CompTIA A+. Familiarity with help desk ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and standard office software is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help IT Helpers effectively assist users and resolve technical issues. These skills are crucial for maintaining smooth IT operations and ensuring user satisfaction in a technology-dependent work environment.

What are some common challenges IT helpers face when supporting end-users, and how can they effectively address them?

IT Helpers often encounter challenges such as communicating complex technical information to users with varying levels of technical knowledge, managing multiple support requests simultaneously, and quickly diagnosing issues across diverse hardware and software environments. To address these challenges, successful IT Helpers practice active listening, use clear and simple language, prioritize tasks based on urgency, and continually update their technical skills. Building strong relationships with end-users and collaborating closely with the broader IT team also helps in resolving issues efficiently and maintaining a positive support experience.

Are IT help desk jobs hard to get?

This role troubleshoots hardware, peripherals, and basic EMR workflows, coordinates with centralized IT teams, and ensures staff have the reliable tools needed to support uninterrupted patient care. This position will work primarily out of our Taylorsville, UT location with travel to clinics as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Strong hands-on hardware and software troubleshooting abilities.
    • Foundational knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365, network connectivity, and clinical peripherals.

Escalate complex EMR build, configuration, interface, reporting, billing, provider, or vendor-related issues to EMR Specialist II or EMR Administrator.

Perform proper inventory standards and remove outdated, damaged, or retired equipment for disposal, reuse, or tracking.
  • Peripheral & Network Troubleshooting: Support local/network printers, label printers, and clinical scanners. Perform basic physical network troubleshooting (cabling, port checks, Wi-Fi connectivity) and coordinate complex infrastructure fixes with the network team.
  • Clinic Moves & Changes: Support office relocations and department reconfigurations, collaborating with facilities, vendors, and leadership to minimize downtime. Document completed moves, equipment changes, access needs, and follow-up work required.
  • Ticket Management & Communication: Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the ticketing system. Prioritize issues based on patient care impact and translate technical concepts into plain language for clinical users. Maintain professionalism during urgent, high-pressure or patient-care impacting situations.
  • Compliance & Security: Strictly adhere to HIPAA, privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection policies when handling equipment, credentials, and patient-related workflows. Report suspected phishing, malware, unauthorized access, lost equipment, privacy issues, or security concerns according to policy.

Education and Experience:
  • High School Degree or equivalent.
  • 1 year experience in desktop support, help desk, healthcare technology, or EMR support, preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
