It Helper information

What does an IT helper do?

An IT Helper assists with basic technical support tasks in an organization, such as setting up computers, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and providing general assistance to users. They often help maintain computer systems, install updates, and ensure that equipment is running smoothly. IT Helpers are typically the first point of contact for employees experiencing technical difficulties and may escalate more complex problems to senior IT staff. Their role is essential in keeping everyday technology operations running efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Helper, you need a foundational understanding of computer hardware, software troubleshooting, and basic networking, often supported by a relevant diploma or certifications like CompTIA A+. Familiarity with help desk ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and standard office software is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help IT Helpers effectively assist users and resolve technical issues. These skills are crucial for maintaining smooth IT operations and ensuring user satisfaction in a technology-dependent work environment.

What are some common challenges IT helpers face when supporting end-users, and how can they effectively address them?

IT Helpers often encounter challenges such as communicating complex technical information to users with varying levels of technical knowledge, managing multiple support requests simultaneously, and quickly diagnosing issues across diverse hardware and software environments. To address these challenges, successful IT Helpers practice active listening, use clear and simple language, prioritize tasks based on urgency, and continually update their technical skills. Building strong relationships with end-users and collaborating closely with the broader IT team also helps in resolving issues efficiently and maintaining a positive support experience.

The roles often overlap in entry-level environments, but Network Technicians typically require more advanced networking skills and certifications.

Are IT help desk jobs hard to get?

IT help desk jobs can be competitive, especially for entry-level positions, but they often require basic technical skills, customer service abilities, and relevant certifications like CompTIA A+. Gaining experience with common tools and troubleshooting procedures can improve your chances of securing such roles.

Job description

As a Senior JD Edwards (JDE) Functional Analyst, you will play a key role in ensuring our JD Edwards ERP environment effectively supports evolving business needs and organizational goals. You'll partner closely with business stakeholders and IT to understand business processes, translate requirements into functional solutions, configure JDE, and drive continuous improvement across the organization.

This is a hands-on functional role requiring strong JD Edwards experience and the ability to connect business needs with scalable, effective system solutions. You will report to the Product Owner.

What You'll Do

Business Analysis & Partnership

  • Partner with business process owners to understand, document, and validate requirements.

  • Translate business needs into effective functional solutions within JD Edwards.

  • Serve as a trusted liaison between business teams and IT, helping ensure solutions align with business goals.

JD Edwards Functional Expertise

  • Configure JD Edwards modules to support new and evolving business processes.

  • Provide functional expertise across Finance, Supply Chain, and Sales.

  • Maintain system documentation, including configuration records, processes, and SOPs.

  • Identify opportunities to improve system functionality, efficiency, and user experience.

Solution Design

  • Design end-to-end functional solutions, including integrations and data flows.

  • Ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with established architecture and best practices.

  • Partner with technical teams to translate functional requirements into successful system solutions.

Change, Release & Project Delivery

  • Coordinate configuration changes, testing, and production deployments.

  • Ensure changes meet governance standards while minimizing business disruption.

  • Manage functional deliverables and timelines within assigned projects.

  • Contribute to JD Edwards implementations, upgrades, enhancements, and other strategic initiatives.

Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide Tier 2 functional support, including root-cause analysis and issue resolution.

  • Troubleshoot complex functional issues in partnership with business and technical teams.

  • Recommend system improvements and enhancements based on business needs.

  • Continuously look for opportunities to simplify processes and improve how JD Edwards supports the organization.

What You'll Bring

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience with JD Edwards (JDE) ERP systems.

  • Strong functional and configuration expertise within JD Edwards.

  • Deep expertise in at least two functional areas: Finance, Supply Chain, or Sales.

  • Proven experience gathering business requirements and translating them into functional ERP solutions.

  • Experience with solution design, system configuration, integrations, and data flows.

  • Experience supporting ERP implementations, upgrades, and major enhancements.

  • Understanding of change and release management within enterprise environments.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes and develop practical solutions.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with both business and technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

  • Experience integrating AI services with JD Edwards or using AI-enabled tools to improve business or system processes.

  • Experience working across multiple business functions or within a complex, global organization.

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to do more than maintain an ERP system. You'll have the ability to influence how JD Edwards supports the business, partner across functions, contribute to meaningful system improvements, and help shape solutions as business needs continue to evolve.
