Job description

Canal Barge Company

Job Description

IT Project Manager

I. BASIC FUNCTION

The IT Project Manager plans and delivers technology projects across two operating companies, Canal Barge and Marquette Transportation, now aligned under common ownership. This role supports a multi-year integration effort involving migrations, integrations, and new implementations, while keeping modernization and custom development work moving in business lines outside the initial consolidation scope. This is a generalist role by design: most of the time is spent on delivery, with meaningful contribution to demand intake, requirements definition, and business partner engagement.

II. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Project and Program Delivery (initially 80%, future state approx. 60%)

  • Plan, schedule, and drive execution of system migrations, application integrations, platform implementations, and custom software development, including work accelerated by AI-assisted development.

  • Maintain project artifacts scaled to the size and risk of the work: charters, work plans, RAID logs, decision registers, and responsibility assignments.

  • Coordinate internal technical resources, business subject matter experts, and third-party vendors against committed scope and dates.

  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, and quality; escalate variances with a recommended course of action.

  • Own project communications and drive cutover planning, testing coordination, user readiness, and post-implementation stabilization.

B. Portfolio Intake and Prioritization (initially 5%, future state approx. 20%)

  • Serve as an intake point for new technology requests, capturing enough definition to support informed sequencing.

  • Develop preliminary scope, effort, cost, and benefit views for prioritization discussions with IT and business leadership.

  • Maintain portfolio visibility across dependencies, resource contention, and capacity constraints.

C. Business Analysis and Relationship Management (initially 15%, future state approx. 20%)

  • Facilitate requirements elicitation and document processes, functional and non-functional requirements, data needs, and acceptance criteria at a level developers and vendors can build against.

  • Build durable relationships with assigned business functions; represent IT credibly to them and their needs faithfully back to IT.

III. EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, business, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Three to six years managing IT projects with ownership of full delivery lifecycles, not task coordination alone.

  • Direct experience in at least two of: enterprise application implementation, system integration, data migration, or custom software development.

  • Proven ability to write clear requirements, plans, and status communications, and to manage third-party vendors against contracted commitments.

  • Working command of both traditional and iterative delivery approaches, with the judgment to apply the right one.

  • Proficiency with project and work management tooling (monday.com, Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, Jira, or comparable) and Microsoft 365.

  • Preferred: PMP or equivalent certification; experience delivering during a merger or consolidation; business analysis training; background in marine transportation, logistics, or another asset-intensive industry; exposure to legacy application modernization and IT governance.
