Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced iSeries Systems Architect to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of our IBM i (AS400/iSeries/System i) infrastructure. This role is essential to ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of our enterprise systems. The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise in IBM i and IBM Power Systems environments, along with a strategic mindset to align infrastructure with evolving business goals.
The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000 USD, which is dependent on a several factors including relevant experience, geography, business needs and market demand. This role may offer the following benefits: medical, vision, and dental insurance; life insurance; disability insurance; a 401(k)-matching program; among other employee benefits. This role may also be eligible for short-term or long-term incentive compensation, including, but not limited to, cash bonuses. This role includes paid Personal Time Off and paid company holidays.
Responsibilities
Architecture & Design
• Design and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance IBM i system architectures.
• Develop infrastructure strategies that support business continuity, disaster recovery, and future growth.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend enhancements to the IBM i platform.
System Management
• Install, configure, and maintain IBM i operating systems.
• Manage OS upgrades, PTFs, and hardware refresh cycles.
• Monitor and oversee system performance, capacity planning, and tuning.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues.
• Implement and maintain backup and recovery procedures using BRMS.
• Ensure high availability and reliability of IBM i systems.
• Plan, organize, and implement technical projects.
Security & Compliance
• Implement and maintain security policies, user access controls, and audit procedures.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., SOX, PCI, Gaming Control Boards).
Automation & Scripting
• Develop and maintain scripts for system and storage administration using CL and SQL.
• Utilize configuration management tools such as PM400 and iNavigator.
Collaboration & Leadership
• Collaborate with application development, network, and security teams to ensure seamless integration.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior staff.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for IBM i-related projects and initiatives.
• Provide technical support to developers, platform administrators, and other teams.
• Diagnose and resolve complex system and storage issues.
• Participate in after-hours system deployments and maintenance.
• Participate in on-call rotation.
Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and policies.
• Generate reports on system health, performance, and usage metrics.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 5+ years of experience working with IBM i systems in an enterprise environment.
• Proven experience in IBM i system architecture, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
• Strong knowledge of IBM i operating system, CL programming, SQL, and DB2 for i.
• Familiarity with Power Systems hardware and virtualization (PowerVM, HMC).
• Experience with backup/recovery solutions and high availability (HA) technologies.
• Experience with automation and monitoring tools.
• Understanding of network concepts and protocols.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
Preferred Skills
• Previous experience with Mimix replication.
• Experience with BRMS.
• Experience with Robot Monitoring Tools.
• Familiarity with best practices in IBM i environments.
• Knowledge of modern integration techniques (e.g., APIs, web services) with IBM i.
