Is UX a dead field?

User Experience (UX) design is an active and evolving field that remains essential in creating user-centered digital products. As technology advances, UX designers, including iOS designers, continue to adapt by learning new tools, such as prototyping software and user research methods, to meet changing user needs. The demand for skilled UX professionals persists across industries, making it a viable career choice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an iOS Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an iOS Designer, you need a strong background in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, with proficiency in Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines and a portfolio showcasing mobile app projects. Familiarity with design tools like Sketch, Figma, and Adobe XD, as well as prototyping and handoff systems, is typically required. Strong collaboration, creativity, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for working with developers and product teams. These skills ensure the creation of intuitive, visually appealing, and user-centered mobile applications that meet both user needs and platform standards.

What does an iOS Designer do?

An iOS Designer is responsible for creating the visual and interactive elements of mobile applications that run on Apple's iOS devices, such as iPhones and iPads. Their work includes designing user interfaces, crafting app icons, choosing color schemes, and ensuring the app provides an intuitive and visually appealing user experience. iOS Designers collaborate closely with developers and product managers to translate requirements into engaging app designs that adhere to Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. They use tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD to create design prototypes and assets. Their goal is to make apps not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and easy to use.

Are iOS devs in demand?

iOS developers are in high demand due to the popularity of Apple devices and the growth of mobile app markets. Skills in Swift, Objective-C, and experience with Xcode increase employability, and many companies seek developers for app creation, updates, and maintenance. The role often requires staying current with iOS updates and app store policies.

Is UI/UX still in demand in 2026?

UI/UX design remains in high demand in 2026, especially for iOS designers, as companies prioritize user-centered app experiences. Skills in prototyping tools, user research, and mobile interface design continue to be valuable in the evolving tech landscape.

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities in the iOS app development process.

How much do Apple designers get paid?

Apple designers, including iOS designers, typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and seniority. Senior or specialized designers may earn higher salaries, often supplemented with bonuses and stock options. Compensation also varies based on skills in design tools and industry experience.

How does an iOS Designer typically collaborate with developers and product managers during the app development process?

As an iOS Designer, you will work closely with iOS developers and product managers throughout the app development lifecycle. Collaboration usually starts with brainstorming sessions to define user flows and core features, followed by creating wireframes and interactive prototypes. Designers frequently provide developers with detailed design assets and specifications, and participate in regular check-ins to ensure design fidelity in the final product. Effective communication and openness to feedback are essential, as you'll often adjust your designs based on technical constraints or evolving product requirements.

Job description

Sesame Job Opportunity

Sesame believes in a future where computers are lifelike - with the ability to see, hear, and collaborate with us in ways that feel natural and human. With this vision, we're designing a new kind of computer, focused on making voice agents part of our daily lives. Our team brings together founders from Oculus and Ubiquity6, alongside proven leaders from Meta, Google, and Apple, with deep expertise spanning hardware and software. Join us in shaping a future where computers truly come alive.

Responsibilities:
  • Build Sesame's standalone companion app — the foundation for a new consumer product category — on a team that highly values craft and quality.
  • Work with multiple teams across engineering, design, and product to ship complex projects that delight users.
  • Help build the iOS team at Sesame by providing leadership on best practices and modern iOS app design.
  • Work together with iOS, Android, and web engineers to define the mobile and web strategy for Sesame moving forward.
Required Qualifications:
  • Strong intuition and deeply considered opinions about iOS app design and aesthetics.
  • You've worked on some delightful, design-forward apps over the course of your career.
  • Proven technical leader who has taken primary responsibility for shipping apps or major features to production multiple times
  • Passionate about shipping great products. You're highly motivated by understanding what makes users tick and finding ways to delight them.
  • Passionate about the complex engineering involved in building lightning-fast, ergonomic, and innovative iOS UI.
  • Expert in eliminating latency in complex iOS apps; nothing— from the network to the architecture or the limitations of the iOS SDK— will get in the way of you cutting those few extra milliseconds off of an interaction.
  • Always up to date on the latest iOS UI/UX design patterns; tuned into the Apple release cycle and always thinking about how the latest features can help the team produce an even more incredible experience.
  • Lots of hands-on experience with the software development lifecycle of iOS apps: build trains, test strategy, and the latest UI architecture patterns.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience building complex or advanced UI that required you to step off the golden path of the SDK.
  • Experience with real-time communications, including WebRTC, Websockets, audio/video codecs, compression protocols, etc.
  • Expertise in managing battery drain in complex applications, including media or graphics-intensive applications.
  • Experience integrating BLE peripherals on iOS.
  • Metal or other graphics/shader experience.
  • Contributions to open-source iOS projects or a strong personal portfolio of iOS applications.
  • Experience building AI consumer products.
