The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time IOM Technologist 1 to work at the UHealth campus in Miami, Fl.
CORE SUMMARY:
The IOM Technologist 1, under direct supervision of the Chief IOM Technologist or the physician, performs all basic IOM (Intraoperative Monitoring) modalities, such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), and evoked potentials to monitor the functional integrity of certain neural structures. Moreover, the incumbent provides monitoring services to the surgical team, including collecting and analyzing multiple types of recordings and measurements.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under direct supervision, conducts basic evaluations of the central nervous system (CNS) during surgery and provides early warning to the surgeon or supervisor about potential neural injury.
Tests procedures include somatosensory evoked potentials, brainstem auditory evoked potentials and electromyogram.
Assists with pre-operative testing of patient at surgeon's request.
Performs all duties and responsibilities required for multi-modality monitoring in compliance with all current standards of care.
Assesses intraoperative procedures relative to orders for monitoring and acts to address deviation from established protocols.
Maintains quality control methods for all monitoring performed.
Archives all relevant data and ensures confidentiality of records is preserved.
Monitors equipment to ensure its working appropriately, ensures equipment is maintained and stored properly, implements appropriate safety procedures relative to equipment, and notifies managing staff of all equipment related issues or concerns.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB SUMMARY
The IOM Technologist 1, under the direct supervision of the Chief IOM Technologist or supervising physician, provides highly specialized intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring services for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients undergoing neurosurgical, orthopedic spine, vascular, otolaryngologic, interventional, and other complex surgical procedures. This position performs multimodality intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring including, but not limited to, SSEPs, MEPs, EMG, EEG, BAEPs, cranial nerve monitoring, and other techniques as clinically indicated. The role requires advanced knowledge of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, anatomy, physiology, and surgical considerations to accurately acquire, assess, interpret, and communicate neurophysiological findings in support of patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS
Perform intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM) in accordance with established protocols and physician direction to support surgical teams and optimize patient outcomes while ensuring infection prevention, sterile field, and electrical safety.
Obtain accurate baseline assessments for all patients, including pre-intubation and pre-positioning measurements.
Continuously evaluate neurophysiological signals and responses, demonstrating clinical judgment in identifying, interpreting, and escalating significant neurophysiological changes during surgery.
Differentiate between true neurological changes and artifact-related signal variations, escalating concerns promptly when appropriate.
Monitor and assess the impact of hemodynamic changes, body temperature, and anesthetic techniques on neurophysiological data.
Communicate real-time findings clearly and effectively to physicians, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team to ensure seamless procedural support.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of monitoring data, clinical events, and interventions. Ensure compliance with all institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards, quality assurance/quality improvement, and competency participation.
Ensure proper setup, calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of IOM equipment before and during procedures.
Maintain accountability for equipment functionality, inventory, and operational readiness across assigned sites.
Support a collaborative team environment by sharing knowledge, assisting colleagues, and contributing to team-based problem-solving.
Uphold departmental standards for patient care, teamwork, and service excellence.
Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and accountability in all clinical and administrative responsibilities.
Maintain flexibility to support varying surgical schedules, including early start times, extended procedures, and other operational needs as required.
Participate in an on-call rotation to support continuous patient care, including weekend and after-hours, and holiday coverage. This includes one primary technician assigned for weekend coverage with an
