The Enterprise Litigation, Investigations, and e-Discovery Legal team operates in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. As Director, Assistant General Counsel, you will serve as a senior leader within GEICO's Corporate Litigation and Investigation team, overseeing a team of attorneys responsible for managing complex internal and external investigations, high-risk matters, and enterprise-wide investigative programs. You will report directly to the Senior Director of Corporate Litigation and Investigations and partner with executive leadership across the organization.

The successful candidate will be a strategic leader who can navigate complex legal and business challenges, drive continuous improvement across investigative functions, and build strong partnerships throughout the enterprise. They will bring sound judgment, credibility, and a demonstrated ability to manage high-stakes matters from inception through resolution.

Location:
  • This is a hybrid role, on-site 3 days per week at Bethesda, MD; New York, NY; or Cleveland, OH.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of attorneys and investigative professionals responsible for conducting and overseeing complex internal and external investigations.
  • Provide strategic direction on investigations involving allegations of fraud, misconduct, regulatory compliance issues, whistleblower complaints, conflicts of interest, employee relations concerns, and other high-risk matters.
  • Oversee responses to government inquiries, regulatory examinations, subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and other external investigations.
  • Direct investigation strategy for matters involving significant legal, financial, operational, or reputational risk to the company.
  • Partner with senior leaders across Human Resources, Employment Law, Compliance, Internal Audit, Security, Associate Relations, Corporate Communications, Privacy, and business operations to ensure effective investigation management and risk mitigation.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and governance frameworks to strengthen GEICO's Investigations Center of Excellence and promote consistency across investigative functions.
  • Analyze investigation trends, identify systemic risks, and provide actionable recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Lead transformational initiatives designed to improve investigative processes, reporting, metrics, technology solutions, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage outside counsel and external consultants on complex investigations and related litigation matters.
  • Mentor and develop attorneys and investigative professionals while fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
  • 10+ years of legal experience conducting, managing, or advising on complex investigations, preferably within a large corporation, law firm, regulatory agency, or insurance organization.
  • Significant experience leading internal investigations, regulatory investigations, compliance reviews, or other high-risk investigative matters.
  • Demonstrated success managing teams of attorneys, investigators, or other legal professionals.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to advise senior business leaders on sensitive and high-profile matters.
  • Exceptional analytical, interviewing, fact-finding, and problem-solving skills.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues clearly to executive audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing or overseeing complex civil litigation, including multidistrict litigation, mass torts, or class actions.
  • Prior experience developing or leading an investigations program, center of excellence, or enterprise governance function.
  • Experience managing employment related litigation, including wage and hour litigation.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies and responding to governmental inquiries or enforcement actions.
  • Insurance industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Certified Fraud Examiner, compliance, or investigative credentials are a plus.
  • Strategic judgment to assess risks and make informed decisions.
  • Prior experience managing a team of legal professionals.

Annual Salary

$159,900.00 - $280,850.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
