JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Position Summary
The Lead Intramural Official is responsible for officiating intramural sports contests, ensuring participant safety, enforcing league rules, and providing leadership to officiating staff. This position serves as a role model for officials by demonstrating professionalism, strong communication skills, and sound judgment during all intramural events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Officiate intramural sports contests according to established rules and policies.
  • Serve as the lead official during assigned games and special events.
  • Assist with training, mentoring, and evaluating new officials.
  • Ensure a safe and positive environment for all participants.
  • Manage game flow, resolve conflicts, and address participant concerns professionally.
  • Interpret and enforce intramural sports rules consistently and fairly.
  • Complete incident and injury reports when necessary.
  • Assist supervisors with game setup, equipment management, and facility inspections.
  • Communicate effectively with participants, team captains, and recreation staff.
  • Support the mission and goals of the competitive sports program.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a current employee for Competitive Sports with a minimum of one semester of employment.
  • Knowledge of rules and mechanics and experience officiating for two or more major sports within Intramural Sports at Penn State.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Availability to work a minimum of two shifts per week. More is preferred.
