Job Description
The Contractor will provide interpreter services, sign language, and/or other recognized modes of interpreting services for Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing employees and applicants on an as-needed basis.
ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide on-site ASL interpreting for meetings, trainings, briefings, and daily workplace communication.
  • Deliver interpreting in ASL, PSE, MCE, Contact Sign, Tactile Sign, or Oral Transliteration as needed.
  • Accurately convey tone, nuance, and intent in both sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign.
  • Participate in team interpreting for sessions exceeding 30 minutes.
  • Respond to urgent requests (<48 hours' notice) when needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional interpreting standards.
  • Provide advance confirmation of interpreter name/certifications for scheduled assignments.
  • Communicate promptly about delays, emergencies, or coverage needs.

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Minimum 3 years of professional ASL interpreting experience.
  • Current RID certification (required).
  • Fluency in ASL and English, including technical and fast-paced dialogue.
  • Ability to interpret effectively across diverse communication modes.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible for DoD facility access.
    Strong reliability, professionalism, and communication skills.

PREFERRED:
  • Prior government, military, or technical interpreting experience.
  • Existing CAC badge (not required but a plus).

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Interpretation, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Education, Communication, or a related field.
  • Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or equivalent formal ASL interpreter education strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with RID certification and 3+ years of professional interpreting experience may qualify in lieu of a degree

OTHER
  • Work Hours: Primarily Tuesday-Thursday, occasional Mondays, 7:30am-2:30pm
  • Short-Notice Coverage: Must be available for urgent requests with less than 48 hours' notice
