Job description

Internship Opportunity

This opportunity will expose students to experiences in career fields of interest in a local government setting. These positions are classified as temporary and do not qualify for benefits.

The Mayor's Office is seeking a talented and energetic undergraduate intern to assist with a multitude of tasks, projects, and initiatives. This internship provides a valuable opportunity to gain a unique view of the inner workings of Town government, as well as gaining professional-level public sector experience. The Mayor's Office works with residents, elected officials, local businesses, community groups and organizations, and federal and state agencies.

Students with a background in Public Policy, Public Affairs, Public Administration, Journalism, and Communications are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should include a resume and cover letter that describes why they are interested in this internship and working in local government.

Essential Functions

Some of the tasks that interns will be involved in will include:

  • Assisting with special projects
  • Preparing proclamations and special recognitions
  • Helping to create and execute a Social Media strategy
  • Research and data analysis
  • Clerical work including handling mail, data entry tasks, correspondence, filing, copying, etc.
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an internship position with the Town of Chapel Hill, candidates must:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate program from an accredited college or university
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient with computers and software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Social Media savvy
  • Eager to learn and able to work independently
Supplemental Information
  • Each intern will be paid a rate of $20.00 per hour
  • You must first complete the pre-employment screening process before starting work.
  • Program Support employees do not accrue Town benefits and may not work more than 950 hours in a rolling 12-month period.
  • Students will work on average 10 to 12 hours per week depending on school schedules and the needs of the department.
  • Each department can be flexible depending on the schedule and availability of the student, but hours will generally fall between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. This internship may include some limited evening hours.
