Summary
An adjunct instructor is responsible for teaching, service, andrelated administrative activities. This position may also includeacademic advising, program design, and student mentoring. Dependingon the sub-discipline within Art and Design, evidence ofproficiency in various forms of technology, including Adobesoftware, may be necessary. Within the sub-discipline of studioart, our curriculum includes the following specializations: Drawing(pencil, charcoal, ink, pastels), Painting (watercolor, oil, acrylic, mixed media), Sculpture (woodworking, modeling, casting),Printmaking (etching, lithography, screen printing), Ceramics(pottery, sculpture, hand-building, glazing), Mixed Media(combining various materials and methods). This position may alsoinclude academic advising, program design, and studentmentoring.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators Teaching and Learning
  • Focus on the talents, interests, and future of the student byclearly communicating learning goals and how those goals areassessed, teaching course sessions in an organized way, providingtime for reflection, discussion, and application of ideas orinformation and by making learning engaging and interesting.
  • Develop adaptive thinking and problem-solving skills by usingexamples or illustrations to explain difficult points, encouragestudents to question ideas or information in the subject, adjustinstruction if students experience difficulties in learning, helpstudents to understand the language and processes of the subject,and help students to think through and solve problems, either bythemselves or together as a group.
  • Further lifelong learning by providing useful feedback on testsor completed assignments, using assessment results to provide extrahelp or extended learning opportunities.
  • Establish a positive, productive, and respectful classroomenvironment that is conducive to learning.
  • Hold all classes as scheduled and be punctual in starting andending classes.
  • Enforce/respect university policies, procedures, and rules andinform the appropriate university official of any violations orinappropriate conduct by students that cannot be redressed throughnormal faculty intervention.
  • Distribute the syllabus to each student enrolled in each coursetaught by the first class meeting.
  • Follow the established course schedule, and when needed,provide written notice of any substantial change(s).
  • Require use of the course text(s) to an extent that warrantspurchase.
  • Ensure that students receive reasonable and timely assistancewith course assignments/assessments as requested.
  • Administer either an exam or other evaluative activity duringthe scheduled final exam time for every course.
  • Determine final grades as per the method prescribed in thesyllabus.
  • Mentoring, such as promoting volunteer opportunities,conducting research with students, providing curricularenhancements or extensions, tutoring, promoting resume-buildinginitiatives, promoting responsible citizenship inside and outsideof the campus, promoting leadership opportunities, connectingstudents with university resources, helping students to solveproblems or adapt their thinking, and promoting healthy and ethicallifestyles.

  • Complete any other requirements as requested by the dean.

  • Supervise laboratories, independent study activities, andoff-campus learning such as practicums and internships.

  • Exhibit interpersonal effectiveness with and respect forstudents, colleagues, and administrators by acting as a team playerand coordinating work behavior with colleagues.
Subject Matter Expertise
  • Design, develop, and teach assigned undergraduate and graduatecourses and seminars.

  • Master’s degree required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities –
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically and solve problemsindependently.
  • Ability to be organized and work on multiple taskssimultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,Canvas
Work Environment

Physical Abilities -
  • Stamina to teach class as required.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended time periods.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
