How much do internship wiring harness design jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship wiring harness design in the United States is $21.67, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.27 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an internship in wiring harness design involve?

An Internship in Wiring Harness Design typically involves assisting engineers in designing, developing, and testing electrical wiring systems used in vehicles or industrial machinery. Interns may work with computer-aided design (CAD) software to create wiring diagrams, perform basic calculations, and help with the selection of materials and components. They often collaborate with other teams to ensure that wiring harnesses meet safety, reliability, and regulatory standards. This internship provides hands-on experience in the automotive or manufacturing industries and helps students apply their classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in wiring harness design?

To thrive as an Internship Wiring Harness Design, you need foundational knowledge in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and familiarity with automotive or aerospace systems, typically gained through relevant coursework or a related degree program. Experience with CAD software (such as CATIA, AutoCAD, or SolidWorks), wire routing tools, and basic knowledge of industry standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620 are commonly required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in collaborative design environments. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure accurate, efficient, and safe wiring harness designs that meet industry requirements.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an internship in wiring harness design?

As an intern in wiring harness design, you will typically assist with creating and updating wiring diagrams, supporting the layout of harnesses in CAD software, and working closely with engineers to ensure designs meet functional and safety requirements. You might also be involved in hands-on prototyping, testing harness assemblies, and contributing to documentation. Collaboration with teams from mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing departments is common, giving you valuable exposure to the full product development cycle and opportunities to learn from experienced professionals.

What is the difference between Internship Wiring Harness Design vs Wiring Harness Design Engineer?

AspectInternship Wiring Harness DesignWiring Harness Design Engineer
QualificationsEnrolled in relevant engineering program, basic knowledgeBachelor's or higher in electrical or mechanical engineering, professional certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level tasks, supervisedFull-time engineering roles, independent project work
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in wiring harness layouts, learning design toolsDesigning wiring harnesses, validating designs, collaborating with manufacturing

Internship Wiring Harness Design positions are entry-level, focused on learning and assisting with basic tasks. Wiring Harness Design Engineers hold full professional roles, responsible for designing and validating wiring harnesses independently. The internship provides foundational experience, while the engineer role involves advanced design work and project management.
