Heavy Equipment Intern - Service Technician Position Purpose

The Heavy Equipment Service Technician Intern at Kirby-Smith Machinery is responsible for working alongside experienced technicians to learn the skills needed to diagnose and repair heavy equipment. This position offers the intern the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, technical training, and become familiar with the distributor environment. This internship will range from 12 to 24 months, depending on the partnering school. 

Heavy Equipment Intern - Service Technician Essential Functions

  • Communicates and supports the Kirby Smith vision and core values of One Mission, One Team, One Plan, One Goal
  • Practices and promotes safe work habits, following company policies and safety regulations
  • Assists experienced technicians with diagnostics in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, repairs, and maintenance of heavy equipment
  • Continuously learns to interpret technical documents, such as schematics, service manuals, and inspection reports
  • Observes experienced technicians to learn how to properly order parts, complete service documents, and perform repair processes
  • Completes assigned tasks accurately and efficiently while demonstrating a willingness to learn
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area, including shop tools and equipment
  • Attends training sessions, toolbox talks, and team meetings
  • Consistent and reliable on-site attendance
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned 

Heavy Equipment Intern - Service Technician Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled as a student
  • Strong interest in repairing heavy equipment, machinery, or related mechanical fields
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and mechanical systems
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Valid driver’s license preferred 

Heavy Equipment Intern - Service Technician Physical Requirements:

  • Pushes/Pulls/Lifts/Carries up to 100 pounds
  • Physical ability to squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb, and reach overhead
  • Ability to work in extreme heat or cold and wet, damp, dusty, or windy conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises, hazardous materials, and fumes/odors 
  • Physical ability to perform maintenance on equipment for extended hours, with continual mounting and dismounting throughout the workday
  • Adheres to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintains individual PPE in a functional condition
