About the Internship
Our 12 1/2 month internship emphasizes emergency medicine and critical care. Interns spend approximately 60% of their time on emergency or inpatient shifts, with access to specialists and experienced emergency doctors for consultation. Extensive daily case rounds ensure interns learn from each case they see, as well as from cases managed by other doctors.
Rotations and Learning Opportunities
  • Emergency and Inpatient Shifts: Interns manage emergency cases and inpatient care, working closely with specialists.
  • Surgery and Internal Medicine Rotations: Gain hands-on experience in surgery and internal medicine.
  • Elective Rotations: Choose from specialties like Ophthalmology, Radiology, Oncology, Neurology, Avian/Exotics, and Cardiology.
  • Weekly Didactic Rounds: Learn from specialists through structured educational sessions.
  • Teaching Opportunities: Interns participate in teaching technicians and visiting student externs.
Schedule and Responsibilities
  • Rotating Schedule: Includes medicine, surgery, specialty electives, and emergency rotations.
  • Primary Case Management: Interns function as primary doctors from day one, handling client communications and medical record keeping.
  • Work-Life Balance: Interns work 5 days a week with 2 guaranteed days off, plus 2 weeks of vacation. Must work two major holidays and most minor holidays.
Facility Highlights
  • State-of-the-Art Equipment: Digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, MRI, and more.
  • Advanced ICU: Oxygen cages, mechanical ventilator, telemetric electrocardiography, defibrillator, pulse oximetry, and more.
  • In-House Diagnostics: Blood gas and electrolyte monitors, CBC, chemistry, and coagulation analyzers.
Staff and Support
  • Specialists: Internal medicine, surgery, radiology, oncology, neurology, emergency/critical care, cardiology, ophthalmology, and avian/exotic medicine.
  • Experienced Emergency Doctors: Approximately twenty internship-trained and experienced emergency doctors.
  • Highly Trained Technicians: Certified technicians with specialty certification, capable of advanced patient monitoring and care.
Special Note for Mid-Year Graduates
OSVS participates in the VIRMP match program for internships and residencies starting in July. However, positions are available for students starting in February, allowing new graduates to develop clinical skills before the busy summer months. Submit materials by November 1st to amy.morgan@unitedvetcare.com. Decisions will be made by December 1.
