Job description

About JerseySTEM
All JerseySTEM roles are pro-bono (unpaid) positions.
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.
Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization's gender-equity agenda.
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately six flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.
Overview
This is a pro-bono position.
JerseySTEM is seeking an experience member to design, implement, and architect our automation stack. The automation stack is the set of tools and workflow integrations that streamline operations, using AI features where helpful.
This role focuses on reducing manual work, improving consistency, enabling workflow-level interoperability across tools, and building a lean team to scale and sustain automation capabilities.
AI scope: Uses built-in AI features (e.g., summarization, classification, routing) inside automation tools; no model training, data science, or ML expertise required.
Responsibilities
  • Define, build, and manage JerseySTEM's automation stack using tools such as Automation Anywhere, Google Apps Script, and other workflow-centric connectors.
  • Map and automate key cross-functional workflows.
  • Add AI-assisted steps where helpful.
  • Monitor and maintain automations for reliability, performance, and clarity.
  • Integrate platforms (Google Workspace, Salesforce, iCIMS, Jira, etc.) with a focus on interoperability at the workflow level, not data engineering.
  • Partner within the TECH team to ensure automations align with reference architecture, governance, and security guidelines.
  • Recruit and lead a lean team to support automation design, development, and maintenance.
  • Mentor contributors and uphold quality and consistency in automation practices.
  • Troubleshoot automation issues and implement long-term fixes.
  • Document workflows, dependencies, and integration points, ensuring clarity and shared understanding.
  • Establish simple governance practices for responsible, reliable automation use.
  • Participate in virtual meetings and collaborate with leadership to identify high-value workflow automation opportunities.

Qualifications
  • A Minimum of 10 years experience in a Technology role.
  • Familiarity with automation platforms (Automation Anywhere, Google Apps Script, or similar).
  • Understanding of workflow design, trigger-based automations, and lightweight API integrations.
  • Experience (or curiosity) with AI-assisted automation features (e.g., GPT steps for summarization, classification, or sentiment-based routing).
  • Ability to explain technical concepts simply to non-technical members.
  • Comfortable working in a remote, member-driven environment.
  • Minimum commitment of 6 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with workflow automation, scripting, or process engineering.
  • Familiarity with core operating platforms (Google Workspace, Salesforce, iCIMS, Jira, or similar).
  • Prior exposure to distributed teams.
  • Retired professionals or those seeking meaningful pro bono work are welcome.
