About the Art Initiative:  

Art at Barclays Center is a multi-year contemporary art program embedded within one of New York City's most visible civic venues. The program commissions and presents ambitious artworks by leading and emerging artists across public art, digital commissions, and time-based media. Working with artists, galleries, museums, and cultural partners, the program activates the arena as a site for artistic inquiry, public engagement, and shared civic experience. 

SUMMARY:  

The Curatorial Intern supports the development, presentation, care, and interpretation of artworks presented through the art program. The role provides exposure to the commissioning process for new public art projects and opportunities to work directly with artists and project partners. Specific tasks are also focused on visitor engagement, interpretive materials, and on-site stewardship. 

The intern will work closely with the Curatorial Lead and project teams, contributing to active projects while learning through observation, research, and hands-on support within a complex public setting. 

Hourly Rate: $18 an hour 

Internship Duration: May - October (Start and end dates can be flexible) 

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Commissioning & Curatorial Support 

  • Support aspects of the commissioning process for upcoming public art projects
  • Conduct research on artists, artworks, and relevant precedents
  • Assist with meeting preparation, note-taking, and follow-up for artist and project meetings
  • Participate in studio visits, site walks, and project discussions as appropriate

Tours & Engagement 

  • Assist in developing a structured tour program for current and upcoming art projects
  • Lead private or small-group tours on occasion for internal stakeholders, partners, or invited guests
  • Help develop tour narratives, talking points, and interpretive frameworks for varied audiences
  • Educational & Interpretive Materials
  • Assist with drafting and editing interpretive texts, wall labels, and digital content
  • Help develop engagement tools and educational materials related to commissioned artworks
  • Support educational initiatives connected to the art program
  • On-Site Stewardship & Artwork Care
  • Work regularly on site at Barclays Center and conduct visual checks of installed artworks
  • Document and report any damage, wear, or issues to the curatorial and operations teams
  • Assist in developing and documenting maintenance protocols for current and upcoming art projects
  • Support the organization of condition reports, images, and care documentation

WHO YOU ARE:

  • Passion for the Arts 
  • Strong interest in contemporary art, public art, museum education, or curatorial practice
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including comfort speaking with small groups
  • Strong observational skills and care when working around artworks in public spaces
  • Reliable, organized, and attentive to detail
  • Comfortable working on site in a busy, public-facing environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively while taking initiative within defined responsibilities
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace; strong research and writing skills
  • Prior experience in museums, galleries, education, or arts organizations is a plus 

Requirements: 

  • This program is designed for college seniors, students engaged in graduate studies, or recent graduates
  • All interns must be authorized to work in the US for any employer 
  • Work primarily in an office environment
