Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Assistant Director for Recreation Facilities provides strategic leadership and operational management for approximately 60,000 square feet of campus recreation facilities located within the Student Union, designated recreation spaces in the Ervin J. Nutter Center, and outdoor recreation facilities. The position is responsible for long-range facility planning, operational budgeting, risk management, customer service, membership services, facility scheduling, equipment lifecycle management, and the daily operation of recreation facilities that support student engagement, health, and well-being. The Assistant Director represents Campus Recreation on university committees and collaborates across divisions to ensure recreation facilities support institutional priorities and provide an exceptional campus experience.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports Administration, Physical Education, Higher Education Administration, Business Administration, Facility Management, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional experience in recreation, fitness, athletics, student union, or comparable facility management.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, training, and developing student employees, part-time staff, or volunteers.
  • Experience managing daily facility operations, including scheduling, customer service, facility access, and risk management.
  • Experience using recreation management, membership, or point-of-sale software (such as Fusion or comparable systems).
  • Experience developing and implementing policies, procedures, and standard operating practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across multiple departments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Recreation, Sports Administration, Higher Education, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience administering Fusion recreation management software, including membership management, reporting, and payment integration.
  • Experience overseeing fitness centers, aquatic facilities, outdoor recreation spaces, or multi-use athletic facilities.
  • Experience managing facility renovation, capital replacement, or equipment lifecycle planning.
  • Experience developing risk management plans and emergency response procedures.
  • Working knowledge of applicable safety standards, ADA accessibility requirements, and university policies.
  • Experience with Fusion member management software.

Essential Functions and percent of time:
1. Provide strategic and operational leadership for approximately 60,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities (including but not limited to the fitness center, gymnasium, swimming pool, locker rooms, pickleball courts). Develop long-range operational plans and facility improvement priorities; establish, implement, and evaluate departmental policies, procedures, and risk management practices; oversee daily operations; and ensure facilities support the strategic goals of Campus Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs. (35%)
2. Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and develop approximately 40 student employees providing facility coverage and customer service. (20%)
3. Manage recreation membership services including membership sales, eligibility verification, access control, point-of-sale operations, reporting, and administration of the Fusion recreation management software. Serve as the departmental expert for Fusion configuration, user accounts, program setup, payment integration, data integrity, reporting, troubleshooting, and staff training. Utilize operational and membership data to improve customer service, resource allocation, facility utilization, and operational efficiency. (15%)
4. Develop, administer, and monitor the operating budget for recreation facility operations, including equipment replacement, maintenance, memberships, facility operations, and related expenditures. Exercise independent authority for approved operational expenditures, monitor budget performance, and recommend future funding priorities that support departmental strategic objectives. (10%)

5. Represent Campus Recreation on university committees, planning groups, and collaborative initiatives related to recreation facilities, capital improvements, facility scheduling, accessibility, safety, and operational planning. Serve as the primary liaison between Campus Recreation and campus partners including Athletics, Facilities Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Information Technology, Student Affairs, academic departments, and community organizations regarding recreation facility operations. (5%)
6. Develop and administer a comprehensive capital replacement strategy for recreation equipment, furnishings, and facility improvements, including lifecycle planning, prioritization of capital needs, and recommendations for future investments. (5%)
7. Collect, analyze, interpret, and present operational, financial, membership, participation, and facility utilization data to support strategic planning, resource allocation, assessment, and continuous improvement. (5%)
