What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Solid State Battery internship?

As a Solid State Battery intern, you will likely engage in hands-on laboratory work, such as preparing and analyzing battery materials, assembling test cells, and conducting electrochemical testing. You may also collaborate with researchers and engineers to interpret experimental data and contribute to ongoing research projects. It's common to participate in team meetings, document your findings, and present results to colleagues. This role provides valuable exposure to cutting-edge energy storage technology and the opportunity to develop practical skills in materials science and battery engineering.

What is the difference between Internship Solid State Battery vs Internship Battery Research Assistant?

AspectInternship Solid State BatteryInternship Battery Research Assistant
CredentialsRelevant coursework in electrochemistry, materials scienceBackground in chemistry, materials science, or engineering
Work EnvironmentLaboratories focused on energy storage, materials testingResearch labs, testing facilities, academic or industry settings
Industry UsageElectronics, automotive, renewable energy sectorsEnergy storage, electronics, research institutions

Both internships involve research in energy storage technologies, but the Internship Solid State Battery specifically focuses on developing and testing solid-state battery materials, while the Internship Battery Research Assistant covers broader battery research, including liquid and solid chemistries. The roles share similar credentials and work environments, often within research labs in related industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Solid State Battery, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Solid State Battery Internship, you typically need a strong background in materials science, chemistry, or electrical engineering, often supported by relevant coursework or lab experience. Familiarity with analytical instruments (such as XRD, SEM, or electrochemical workstations) and data analysis tools, as well as knowledge of battery testing protocols, is highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills to excel in collaborative research environments. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to innovative battery development projects and ensure accurate experimental results.

What does an Internship in Solid State Battery involve?

An Internship in Solid State Battery typically involves assisting in the research, development, and testing of advanced battery technologies that use solid electrolytes instead of liquid ones. Interns may work in laboratory settings, help with experiments, analyze data, and learn about the materials and processes used in solid state batteries. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience with cutting-edge energy storage technology and often require a background in chemistry, materials science, or engineering. Interns may also collaborate with experienced scientists and engineers, contributing to projects aimed at improving battery performance and safety.

Job description

Who We Are

Factorial Energy is a pioneering U.S.-based solid-state battery company driving the future of energy storage and electrification. Partnered with global leaders including Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Hyundai, and Kia, Factorial is at the forefront of developing next-generation e-mobility platforms for commercial, defense, and consumer applications—spanning electric vehicles (EVs), drones, eVTOL aircraft, power tools, marine systems, robotics, and more. The company has achieved multiple industry firsts, including being the first to power a demonstration vehicle with a global OEM (Mercedes- Benz) which achieved over 1,200 km (749 mi) of range, and the first to earn UN 38.3 certification for automotive-sized lithium-metal solid-state cells, the first to deliver B-samples of automotive-sized solid-state batteries to major OEMs.

The Opportunity:

Factorial Energy is seeking a Manager/Senior Manager, Solid-State Battery Product Development to join our team in our Billerica, MA location. This person will be responsible for leading lithium-ion cell new product development. The ideal candidate will own the full design-to-manufacturing lifecycle — from prototype design and validation through pilot-line scale-up and production ramp — and partner with R&D, process, manufacturing, and quality teams to translate technical breakthroughs into scalable, reliable products.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead lithium-ion cell design, validation, and transfer from prototype to mass production
  • Define specifications, performance targets, and acceptance criteria
  • Drive root-cause investigations, develop new characterization methods, and continuously improve cycle life, safety, and yield
  • Collaborate with process engineers, suppliers, and external vendors to source, qualify, and scale high-quality materials, components, and tooling
  • Support customer projects with technical reports, datasheets, and on-time delivery of milestones
  • Participate in DFMEA/PFMEA reviews
  • Partner across R&D, manufacturing, and quality to ensure smooth handoffs, alignment on KPIs, and on-time program delivery in a fast-paced team environment
  • Stay current with industry advances in LIB and solid-state technology, evaluate new materials and processes, and bring forward improvements that strengthen product reliability and cost

We are looking for people who:

  • has 5–10 years of hands-on experience in lithium-ion battery (LIB) product development, and has led or substantially contributed to lithium-ion cell design, validation, and transfer from prototype to mass production
  • holds a Bachelor's degree or higher in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with an advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) preferred
  • brings a strong background in cell design, electrochemistry testing, materials characterisation, and failure analysis, ideally with pilot-line scale-up and DFMEA/PFMEA experience
  • has solid-state battery experience (preferred but not required)
  • is willing and able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • is a strong team player — collaborative, communicative, and dependable
  • can work fully on-site in Billerica, MA, with occasional cross-site collaboration with global teams
  • is familiar with automotive quality frameworks (IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP)

Some of our competitive benefits include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Generous paid time off
  • 401(k) plan that includes employer matching funds
  • Education assistance plan
  • Life insurance and disability coverage

Salary Range : $135K-$175K Annual base+ Equity Incentives

Work Location:

805 Middlesex Turnpike, Billerica, MA 01821
