Description:

More and more we see municipalities rely on accurate GIS data to manage assets like sidewalks, roadways, and stormwater infrastructure. Supporting these inventories through field data collection, spatial analysis, and mapping is a growing service at BETA Group, Inc. We are seeking a GIS Intern to support municipal transportation projects by assisting with data collection, GIS data development, and map production. This is a hands-on opportunity to work alongside engineers, planners, and scientists, gain real-world GIS experience, and build valuable skills through cross-training and mentorship.


Responsibilities:

  • Create eye-catching maps, graphics, and visualizations used in real client projects
  • Analyze spatial data to support transportation, environmental, water, and land development projects
  • Assist with building and maintaining GIS databases and web maps
  • Support field data collection and integrate data into GIS platforms
  • Perform geoprocessing and basic spatial analysis
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and learn how GIS fits into the full project lifecycle
  • Learn new skills and contribute to project tasks and activities
  • Ask lots of questions!

Preferred location is BETAโ€™s Lincoln, RI office. Candidates should have flexibility to work from our other office locations.

Requirements:

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Enrolled in a Bachelorโ€™s degree program in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field
  • Understanding of general engineering theory and concepts
  • Proficient in the use of current technology (i.e., tablets, smart phones, laptops, etc.)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong technical aptitude with an eagerness to learn
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Must be able to collect field data and measurements including but not limited to roadway, sidewalk, and utility assets; and perform asset inspections
  • Must be able to lift/move objects weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Must be able to perform field work in both hot and cold weather (rain and/or snow)
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must have a valid driverโ€™s license and reliable transportation

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • ESRI (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS online, etc.)
  • General working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or other CAD platform
  • OSHA 10 Certification
