What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Smart Home Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Smart Home Engineer, you need a basic understanding of electronics, programming (often with languages like Python or C++), and IoT concepts, typically supported by coursework or a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with microcontrollers (such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi), smart home platforms (like Home Assistant), and networking protocols is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate with teams and troubleshoot issues efficiently. These competencies are crucial for developing, testing, and integrating smart home technologies that are reliable and user-friendly.

What types of projects can an Internship Smart Home Engineer expect to work on, and how do these contribute to professional development?

As an Internship Smart Home Engineer, you can expect to participate in projects such as designing, testing, and troubleshooting smart home devices, integrating Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, and developing automation scripts for connected systems. These projects often involve collaboration with hardware and software teams, giving interns exposure to both the technical and practical aspects of product development. Working on real-world assignments not only hones your technical skills but also helps build teamwork, project management, and communication abilities essential for future career growth in the smart home and IoT industry.

Smart Home Installer & Programmer (Lutron, Savant, AV)

Springboard Automation

Newark, NJ • On-site

$35 - $48/hr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Posted 16 days ago

Job description

The Role: Bring Luxury Homes to Life

We don’t do basic TV hangs. Springboard Automation integrates invisible technology into multi-million dollar spaces. We need a sharp, field-proven Technician & Programmer who knows high-end residential integration and wants a company that actually respects their craft.

If you have a killer eye for clean rack-building, know your way around a network, and can program premium control systems, you’ll fit right in. You’ll be joining an awesome, supportive team that has your back on every job site, backed by the best tools, ongoing training, and premium field support in the industry.

What You’ll Do

  • Program & Commission: Set up and configure high-end lighting, shading, and automation systems (Lutron, Savant, and more).
  • System Optimization: Test, troubleshoot, and fine-tune complex residential networks and AV systems, both on-site and remotely.
  • Precision Installation: Install TVs, premium audio, and motorized shading systems where beautiful finishes, clean craftsmanship, rack-building, and attention to detail matter.
  • Collaborate: Work alongside an elite team that operates on a strict "No Ego, No Blame" policy.

What You Need

If you have 2+ years of experience in high-end residential AV, we want to hear from you. We are looking for a blend of the following:

  • Automation Experience: Familiarity with luxury control systems. Experience with Lutron HomeWorks or Savant is highly preferred.
  • The Fundamentals: A solid understanding of standard AV, home networking, WiFi, and signal flow.
  • Craftsmanship: Pride in your work—clean racks, hidden wires, and precise installations.
  • Low-Voltage: Experience with low-voltage wiring and cable management.
  • Physical & Logistics: Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and a valid driver’s license.

Travel Expectation

Overnight travel is an essential function of this role because our projects take us where our clients go.

  • Primary Hubs: Projects in Philadelphia and NYC are common. Longer-distance travel may occur, including destinations such as Florida.
  • Fully Covered: All business travel beyond a normal commute is fully covered.
  • The Perks: We do things right: real hotels, not bargain rooms. Team dinners with drinks. Order the steak. Plus, you will receive a bonus of up to $100 per overnight.

Why Work for Springboard Automation

  • PTO Match: PTO balance match if joining from another AV company
  • No Red Tape: Fast tool approval. If it helps you do the job right, we buy it.
  • Travel Right: When we travel, we do it right. Real hotels (no motels), great team dinners, and a $100/night travel bonus on top of your hourly pay.
  • The Gear: You’ll get your own set of tools, professional apparel, and an employee purchase program at cost.
  • Full Benefits: 401k with match, medical/dental/vision, and PTO + holidays.

Compensation: $35–$48 per hour based on experience + $100 per overnight travel night. NOTE: This is a Lead to Senior Technician role (not an apprentice or entry-level position), with pay determined by skill, experience, and autonomy. The baseline requires a competent tech who can install, wire, and troubleshoot standard AV systems and networks with minimal supervision, while top-scale pay is reserved for an expert who can independently program complex automation systems from scratch, architect advanced networks, and completely spearhead multi-million dollar project sites.

Employment Type: This is a full time, hourly, non-exempt role.

About Springboard Automation

For over 30 years, we’ve built a reputation for excellence. Our culture is built on five core values: Go Above and Beyond, Own the Problem, Say it Positive, Be a Trusted Resource, and Assure Team Happiness. We have a strict "No Ego, No Blame" policy. We win as a team and solve problems as a team.
