What does an Internship Shopify App Developer do?

An Internship Shopify App Developer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining custom applications that integrate with the Shopify platform. Interns typically work under the guidance of experienced developers to learn coding best practices, troubleshoot issues, and implement new features for e-commerce stores. Their responsibilities may include writing code, testing apps, fixing bugs, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver quality solutions that enhance the Shopify experience.

The main difference is that an Internship Shopify App Developer is an entry-level position aimed at gaining experience, often part-time or temporary, while a Shopify App Developer is a full-fledged professional responsible for building and maintaining Shopify apps. Interns typically work under supervision, whereas full developers handle independent projects and client requirements.

How to get an internship at Shopify?

To secure an internship as a Shopify App Developer, candidates should have strong programming skills in languages like JavaScript and Ruby, experience with Shopify's API and app development, and a solid understanding of e-commerce platforms. Applying through Shopify's careers page, building a portfolio of relevant projects, and demonstrating knowledge of Shopify's ecosystem can improve chances. Internships typically require a current student status or recent graduate and may involve technical assessments or interviews.

How much do Shopify interns get paid?

Shopify internship pay varies depending on location and role, but interns typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour. Compensation may also include benefits such as mentorship and skill development opportunities, and some internships are paid full-time or part-time during the summer or academic year.

Will AI replace Shopify developers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace Shopify app developers, as their role involves complex problem-solving, customization, and understanding client needs that require human expertise. AI tools can assist developers by automating routine tasks and enhancing productivity, but human oversight remains essential for creating innovative and tailored solutions within the Shopify ecosystem.

What typical projects or tasks can an Internship Shopify App Developer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship Shopify App Developer, you can expect to work on tasks such as building and testing new app features, fixing bugs, and integrating third-party APIs. You'll often collaborate with senior developers and designers to ensure the app meets Shopify's best practices and user experience standards. It's common to participate in code reviews, contribute to documentation, and attend team meetings to discuss project progress. This hands-on experience helps interns develop both technical and soft skills needed for a successful career in app development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Shopify App Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Shopify App Developer, you need foundational knowledge in web development languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, along with familiarity with Shopify's ecosystem and APIs. Proficiency with tools such as Git, Shopify CLI, and experience working with RESTful or GraphQL APIs is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to app development projects, adapt to evolving requirements, and deliver high-quality, user-focused Shopify apps.

Job description

Who we are
Vidably is building the evidence layer for commerce: verified buyer video, structured with AI, and tied to outcomes. UGC video contains more product truth than specs, studio media, or text reviews because it shows fit, feel, use-case, and tradeoffs in real contexts. It is how people actually decide what to buy.

Today, the most impactful buyer video lives on platforms like TikTok and Reels, disconnected from product pages, outcomes, and brand control. Vidably brings that content onto owned commerce surfaces, uses AI to turn it into structured, SKU-level evidence, and measures what actually drives conversion. We share incremental value with creators, which unlocks far more high-quality buyer video and a system that learns what matters for each product.

This is the missing input for shopping agents. The same signals humans use to buy confidently are the signals an agent needs to recommend, compare, and explain products with real evidence, not guesswork.

Vidably is backed and supported by AI Fund.  Founded by Andrew Ng, AI Fund is backed by over $370 million. As a venture studio, AI Fund works alongside entrepreneurs, venture funds, and corporate partners to build new companies rapidly and increase their odds of success.

About the role
This is a hands-on, jump-into-anything role on a small, talented team. You'll help build the AI-powered evidence layer for commerce, making Vidably self-serve and reliable across real Shopify storefronts. Candidates must currently be based in the Bay Area. Relocation will not be an option for this role.
Responsibilities for the Role Include:
  • Build and ship across the full stack: Shopify app, storefront widget, AI extraction pipeline, internal tooling
  • Harden a live Shopify app and storefront integration across OS 2.0 and legacy theme realities with safe rollouts and easy rollback
  • Extend the mobile web creator upload flow with Mux: QR → prompt → record/upload → consent → submit
  • Turn raw buyer video into structured product evidence at scale: AI extraction, review/approve/publish, and self-serve tooling
What Success Looks Like:
  • Onboarding new customers becomes boring and repeatable
  • Founder minutes per merchant drops materially because workflows are productized
  • We can scale customers without bespoke engineering per store
Required Qualifications Include:
  • You've shipped to production across the stack and you close loops fast — you design, build, debug, and operate
  • Strong fundamentals: performance, reliability, security, and product/UX judgment (especially on conversion-sensitive surfaces)
  • AI-native builder: you ship production code with agentic tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex CLI, similar).
  • You use AI for speed, keep quality high with tests/CI/observability, and can debug when AI output is wrong
  • Thrive in ambiguity and a very small-team environment.
  • You're excited to learn new tools and domains fast, and you jump into whatever needs doing
Nice to Have Skills Include:
  • Shopify apps/theme integration experience, or embedded widget/SDK experience in hostile third-party environments
  • Video pipeline familiarity (Mux or similar)
  • Experimentation/analytics rigor: clean event design, integrity checks, debugging

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
