What is a junior full stack developer?

A Junior Full Stack Developer is an entry-level software professional who works on both the front-end and back-end parts of web applications. They are skilled in basic programming languages and frameworks needed for creating user interfaces as well as handling server-side logic and databases. Typically, juniors work under the guidance of more experienced developers, assisting with coding, debugging, and testing tasks while gradually building their expertise. Their role often involves learning and adapting to new technologies as they gain experience in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior full stack developer?

To thrive as a Junior Full Stack Developer, you need a solid understanding of both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (Node.js, Python, Java, or similar) programming, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and frameworks such as React or Express is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure you can contribute effectively to diverse projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate within development teams.

How do junior full stack developers typically balance learning new technologies with meeting project deadlines?

As a Junior Full Stack Developer, you’ll often juggle learning new frameworks or languages while contributing to active projects. Many teams support this by pairing juniors with more experienced developers, offering code reviews, and allocating time for professional development within sprint cycles. While deadlines are important, managers usually recognize the learning curve and provide guidance to help you prioritize tasks and grow your skills without being overwhelmed. Open communication with your team about your progress and challenges is key to maintaining this balance.

This role is designed for an early-career engineer who has strong technical fundamentals, is eager to learn, and is excited about developing across both frontend and backend technologies.
The Junior Full Stack Engineer will work on well-defined feature tickets, contribute to production applications, and develop their technical skills through hands-on delivery, code reviews, pairing, and mentorship from experienced engineers. This is an opportunity to grow within a collaborative engineering environment that values quality, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
Key ResponsibilitiesFeature Development

  • Participate in technical learning opportunities, architecture discussions, code pairing, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Contribute ideas for improving engineering tools, documentation, development processes, and team practices.
  • Develop familiarity with AI-powered applications and common LLM integration patterns.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience through a coding bootcamp, self-directed learning, or demonstrated personal projects.
  • 0-3 years of professional or internship software engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript, with the ability to read and contribute to code in both languages.
  • Basic familiarity with React.js, including components, props, and state.
  • Understanding of REST APIs, including how to consume APIs and basic principles of API design.
  • Experience with Git, including branching, committing, creating pull requests, and resolving merge conflicts.
  • Ability to write basic SQL queries and understand relational database concepts.
  • Strong curiosity, willingness to learn, and ability to receive and apply constructive feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic or personal project experience with FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
  • Experience building frontend applications with React.js, including coursework, hackathons, or personal projects.
  • Exposure to a cloud platform such as AWS, Azure, or GCP through coursework or personal projects.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts or experience integrating an LLM API into a project.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment through coursework, internships, or extracurricular projects.
Work Environment & Requirements
  • Hybrid work environment with structured in-office days to support onboarding, collaboration, and team engagement.
  • Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and other standard computer equipment.
  • Availability during standard business hours, with flexibility for team ceremonies and occasional production support as needed.
