HMC Machinist Internship Program

Are you interested in becoming a machinist and building a career in advanced manufacturing?

Located just 3 miles south of Princeton, Highway Machine Co. (HMC) offers a hands-on machinist internship program for high school and college students from the surrounding area, including Gibson, Vanderburgh, Pike, Knox, Warrick, and Wabash (IL) counties.

HMC welcomes high school and college students who are currently enrolled in a machining or machinist program and are interested in building a career in advanced manufacturing. Our goal is to build a long-term relationship with each intern, providing the training, experience, and support needed to help them succeed at every stage of their education and career.

For high school students, internships are typically scheduled during the second half of the school day during their final semester. Graduation does not have to mean the end of the internship. Students can continue working with HMC while attending trade school or college, with schedules adjusted around their classes.

HMC interns receive competitive pay and industry leading training while working with some of the largest and most advanced machine tools in the industry. Successful candidates have the opportunity to develop valuable skills, gain real world manufacturing experience, and build a career with a company that has been manufacturing precision components for more than 100 years.

Machinist Intern Candidate Expectations

Candidates should:

  • Have a basic understanding of blueprint reading
  • Be able to use a tape measure, calipers, OD micrometers, and ID micrometers

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail
  • Understand basic part layout
  • Be proficient in basic mathematics
  • Understand basic machining principles, including milling, turning, feeds and speeds, and tooling
  • Be willing to learn, ask questions, and follow safe work practices
  • Be currently enrolled in a machining program or related technical program

What You Will Learn

As an HMC Machinist Intern, you will gain hands on experience with:

  • Machine setups and setup procedures
  • Different machining processes and operations
  • Reading and understanding job packets, including blueprints, travelers, setup drawings, and inspection sheets
  • Safely handling parts using cranes and forklifts
  • Proper use of slings, eyebolts, clevises, and other lifting equipment
  • Selecting, using, and maintaining tooling for different machining operations
  • Reading and writing basic CNC programs
  • Operating machine controls and performing initial or rough machining operations

  • Preventive maintenance and proper care of machine tools
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment

Build Your Future at HMC

This internship is more than a summer job or short-term work experience. It is an opportunity to learn a skilled trade, earn competitive pay, gain valuable industry experience, and build a foundation for a long-term career in manufacturing.

HMC is committed to helping students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, whether their next step is graduation, trade school, college, or a full-time career with HMC.
