Internship Schematic information

What is an internship schematic?

An Internship Schematic is a structured outline or plan that details the objectives, activities, timeline, and expected outcomes of an internship program. It serves as a roadmap for both interns and employers, ensuring that the internship experience is organized and aligns with educational and professional development goals. This schematic may include specific tasks, learning milestones, mentorship arrangements, and evaluation methods. By following an internship schematic, organizations can provide a more meaningful and effective internship experience.

What types of projects do interns typically work on during a schematic internship?

As a Schematic Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of real-world projects that support the design and development process of architectural or engineering schematics. Typical responsibilities include assisting with drafting schematic diagrams, conducting research to support design decisions, and collaborating with experienced team members to refine project layouts. Interns often gain hands-on experience using industry-standard software and participate in project meetings, offering valuable insights and learning opportunities. This role provides a strong foundation for future career growth by exposing you to multiple phases of the schematic design process and fostering teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a schematic design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Schematic Design Intern, you need a basic understanding of architectural and engineering design principles, typically supported by coursework in architecture, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SketchUp, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office, is important for creating and presenting schematic drawings. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and interpret client needs. These skills ensure accurate, innovative designs and smooth project workflows in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

What is the difference between Internship Schematic vs Electrical Engineering Intern?

AspectInternship SchematicElectrical Engineering Intern

Internship Schematic roles focus on learning and assisting with schematic design and circuit diagrams, often requiring basic technical knowledge. Electrical Engineering Internships involve broader engineering tasks, including circuit analysis, testing, and design, typically requiring enrollment in an electrical engineering program. Both roles are found in similar environments and industries, but the Internship Schematic is more specialized in schematic design tasks.

Job Description

Position Overview: As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will utilize your design and analytical skills to develop products from concept to production. The new product development team designs innovative products for the card personalization business. Your experience with embedded hardware design, embedded

firmware development, prototyping, debugging, coordinating with vendors, and interfacing with manufacturing organizations will be key to success in this role. In this role, you will work in a fast-paced environment that values hands-on problem solving, rapid iteration, and continuous improvement through the evaluation of new technologies and tools. You will have the opportunity to develop electronics used in printing, smart card, RFID, motion control, and laser technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, schematic capture, and prototype microcontroller and microprocessor-based products
  • Design and develop complex embedded systems involving mixed-signal design, high-speed interfaces, and integration across hardware and firmware domains
  • Develop or support firmware and/or FPGA designs
  • Lead board bring-up, debugging, and root cause analysis of hardware issues, with the ability to independently drive issues to resolution
  • Test and verify new designs
  • Lead or support transition of designs into production
  • Contribute to identification of emerging technologies and support technical direction within assigned projects
  • Work with vendors and sourcing to define technical requirements for components and subsystems
  • Design to and support qualification of products to applicable regulatory standards such as UL, FCC, and CE
  • Create and execute test plans for hardware and software validation
  • Design and implement test fixtures to verify circuit board and system functionality for production testing
  • Mentor junior engineers, technicians, and interns on design practices and debugging techniques

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded hardware design, schematic capture, layout, and board bring-up, with demonstrated progression in ownership and technical responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, bring up, debug, and deliver embedded hardware systems or major subsystems
  • Strong experience in analog and digital circuit design including DC/DC power supplies and common digital interfaces (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, USB)
  • Experience developing in C/C++ and/or VHDL or Verilog
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams including engineers, lab technicians, product management, and manufacturing
  • Must be able to lawfully work within the US and have unrestricted work authorization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with EE design tools (e.g., Mentor Graphics)
  • Experience with FPGA development tools (e.g., Xilinx, Microsemi, Intel/Altera)
  • Experience with smart card, RFID, NFC, printing, or motion control systems
  • Working knowledge of project management concepts (timelines, costs, requirements, resources)
  • 7+ years of experience in embedded hardware design, schematic capture, layout, and board bring-up
  • Demonstrated ownership of delivering high-quality designs with a focus on reliability, performance, and manufacturability
  • Curiosity and initiative in evaluating new technologies, tools, and design approaches, and applying them to improve development speed, product performance, or test efficiency
  • Experience working in fast-paced development environments with a rapid, iterative approach to design and debugging while maintaining engineering rigor
  • Openness to adopting modern development tools, including AI-assisted tools, to improve design efficiency, debugging, and documentation workflows

Where you will be: Minneapolis, MN, working in‐office Monday through Friday.
