What does an RTL design intern do?

An RTL (Register Transfer Level) Design Intern assists in the hardware design process by writing and verifying digital circuits using hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL. Their primary role is to help develop, simulate, and debug design blocks that will eventually be implemented on chips such as FPGAs or ASICs. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, contributing to design documentation, running testbenches, and ensuring designs meet specifications. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience in digital design, verification, and understanding the full hardware development lifecycle.

What types of projects does an RTL design intern typically work on during their internship?

As an RTL Design Intern, you’ll often assist with designing and verifying digital circuits at the Register Transfer Level, which involves writing and debugging HDL code (such as Verilog or VHDL), running simulations, and supporting the integration of modules into larger systems. Interns usually work on real project tasks alongside experienced design engineers, contributing to blocks or subsystems that may be used in actual chip products. This hands-on experience allows you to develop technical skills, learn industry-standard tools, and gain exposure to the collaborative workflow between design, verification, and validation teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RTL design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RTL Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, computer architecture, and proficiency in hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL, usually supported by coursework in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools (such as ModelSim or Synopsys VCS), version control systems (like Git), and debugging environments is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with senior engineers and interpret design requirements. These skills are crucial for producing accurate, efficient RTL code and contributing effectively to complex hardware design projects.

Job description

Industrial Design Intern

Location: Los Angeles, CA (Onsite)
Compensation: $25-30/hr
Start date: Immediately
Duration: 3 months

About the Role

SprintRay is looking for an Industrial Design Intern who is excited to learn how physical products go from an idea to something customers use every day.

You'll work alongside industrial designers and mechanical engineers on SprintRay's resin 3D printing hardware for dental applications. This internship is focused on physical UX — how products look, feel, open, load, clean, and operate — and on learning how design decisions translate into manufacturable hardware.

This is a hands-on internship. You'll sketch, model, prototype, print, test, and iterate rather than spending all of your time behind a screen. We're looking for someone curious, resourceful, and excited to build things.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support industrial design development across SprintRay's hardware portfolio

  • Create sketches, CAD concepts, renderings, and presentation materials

  • Build physical prototypes using 3D printing, foam, and other rapid-prototyping methods

  • Help evaluate ergonomics, proportions, usability, and physical interactions

  • Work with industrial designers and mechanical engineers to iterate concepts

  • Assist with SolidWorks modeling and design development

  • Explore form, materials, finishes, and manufacturing approaches

  • Participate in design reviews and learn how concepts progress toward production

  • Help maintain design consistency across products and accessories

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related discipline

  • Portfolio demonstrating strong fundamentals in form, proportion, sketching, CAD, and physical product design

  • Comfortable building things by hand and rapidly prototyping ideas

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks; Rhino, KeyShot, or similar tools are a plus

  • Basic understanding of common manufacturing processes such as injection molding, CNC, or sheet metal

  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn

  • Comfortable receiving feedback and iterating quickly

  • Interest in complex physical products, hardware, or consumer electronics

What You'll Learn

You'll get exposure to the full hardware-development process and work directly with designers and engineers developing real products. The goal is for you to leave the internship with stronger industrial design judgment, deeper manufacturing knowledge, and meaningful hands-on product-development experience.

Employment Type

Full-time internship, 3-6 months
