Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Director

Mitchell Technical College โ€“ Mitchell, SD

Mitchell Technical College is seeking a dynamic, qualified individual to serve as the Program Director for our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. This position is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026, providing the successful candidate with a dedicated, foundational year to develop the curriculum, design a modern scanning lab, and secure clinical partnerships prior to welcoming our inaugural cohort of students in Fall 2027. This leadership and instructional role is perfect for a seasoned clinical sonographer looking to transition their expertise into higher education, take ownership of an academic department, and shape the next generation of allied health professionals.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive oversight for the program โ€“ managing administration, ensuring accreditation compliance, and leading classroom and lab instruction to mentor students through foundational concepts and practical clinical skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership & Administration: Oversee the continuous development, organization, administrative operations, and long-term review of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program to ensure total alignment with college goals and institutional standards.
  • Accreditation Compliance: Act as the primary point of contact for programmatic accreditation body requirements (JRC-DMS/CAAHEP), ensuring the curriculum, clinical documentation, and program metrics strictly adhere to national standards.
  • Instructional Delivery: Teach students the essential facts, scanning skills, and clinical methodologies relevant to assigned courses, accommodating varying student backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Curriculum Optimization: Design, implement, and modify instructional resources, lesson plans, and competencies to maintain an engaging, modern, and high-standard learning environment.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Partner with internal faculty, administration, and the program's advisory committee to enhance the department, while modeling the highest professional and ethical standards for students and the community.
  • Records & Assessment: Maintain precise, efficient student records, grading metrics, and program outcomes assessments required for student success and external reporting.
  • Independent Management: Demonstrate strong self-motivation, excellent time management, and the ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision to achieve core program goals.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

To ensure student success and meet institutional standards, candidates must possess a blend of strong clinical experience, proper registry credentials, and excellent communication skills.

  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of full-time, practical clinical experience as a practicing diagnostic medical sonographer. Additionally, candidates must possess experience in clinical or academic instruction, curriculum development, or instructional design.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Credentials: Must be ARDMS credentialed in Abdomen (AB) and Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN).
  • Licensure: Possess or be able to obtain current licensing, certification, or other credentials as required by local, state, and/or federal laws to work in the Diagnostic Sonography field.
  • Core Skills: Exceptional oral and written communication skills; effective multitasking capabilities; and a strong, collaborative work ethic.
  • Background Check: Must be able to successfully pass a state and federal criminal background check.
