As a Backend Engineer on the Co-Experience team, you will work on high-visibility initiatives that define the future of age-appropriate communication. Using modern technologies, you will build and maintain a social ecosystem that ensures safe, civil, and meaningful interactions across diverse age groups.
We are kind, highly collaborative, and draw on a mix of startup and large company backgrounds to iterate faster within Roblox.
Our primary product is a platform-level Party System. As the heartbeat of social interaction on Roblox, this system enables users to coordinate, form groups, and stay connected as they navigate across servers and immersive experiences.
While we have a strong foundation of chat, voice, gameplay mechanics, and creator APIs, we need your expertise to strengthen our backend infrastructure, build out new features, and accelerate our path toward product-market fit. As we scale, your work will directly impact our global community and support the company's top-line growth.
You Have:
  • An undergraduate/graduate degree in computer science, engineering or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in working on microservice architectures with a proven track record in addressing scalability and reliability challenges.
  • 1+ years of experience building systems behind consumer-facing APIs that can handle large numbers of concurrent users.
  • Strong understanding of server-side development and design principles, with proficiency in at least one compiled language such as C#, C++, Java, Golang, or other.
  • Strong product intuition - you think in terms of user experience, tradeoffs, and measurable outcomes, as well as system design.
  • A track record of leveraging AI-assisted development tools to maximize engineering velocity, allowing you to rapidly prototype, iterate on complex logic, and move from ideation to production-ready code with high efficiency.

You Will:
  • Collaborate within a multi-functional team that includes product, design, UXR, frontend and backend engineering.
  • Maintain, improve and scale the Roblox party system to support millions of concurrent users.
  • Participate in design and develop service infrastructure empowering Roblox creators to unlock new ways to co-experience for their users.
  • Partner with other engineering teams (infrastructure, matchmaking, chat, voice, trust and safety) to integrate multiple systems in a reusable, performant and safe manner.
  • Self-organize and take ownership of projects throughout their full lifecycle.
  • Maintain high quality standards while iterating on features with live production traffic.
  • Mentor interns.

The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits as described on this page.

$153,120-$196,750 USD
Roles that are based in an office are onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
