What is an internship quantum software engineer?

An Internship Quantum Software Engineer is a student or recent graduate who works with a team to develop and test software for quantum computers. Their responsibilities often include writing code for quantum algorithms, simulating quantum circuits, and assisting with research projects. They gain hands-on experience with quantum programming languages such as Qiskit, Cirq, or Q#. This role provides valuable exposure to the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing and helps interns build skills for a future career as a quantum software engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship quantum software engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Quantum Software Engineer, you need a solid background in quantum mechanics, computer science, and programming languages such as Python, often supported by enrollment in or completion of a STEM degree. Familiarity with quantum computing frameworks like Qiskit or Cirq, as well as experience with version control systems, is highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork skills set candidates apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for contributing to complex quantum projects, learning rapidly, and collaborating within an innovative research environment.

What are some common challenges faced by quantum software engineering interns, and how can they overcome them?

Quantum Software Engineering interns often encounter challenges such as adapting to new quantum programming languages (like Qiskit or Cirq), understanding complex quantum algorithms, and bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation. Collaborating with experienced team members, actively participating in code reviews, and seeking mentorship can help interns quickly build their skills. Additionally, taking advantage of internal training resources and regularly discussing progress with supervisors ensures effective learning and integration into the team.

Job description

Atย Infleqtionย we solve the world's most challenging problems usingย cutting-edgeย quantum technology. Our mission is to commercialize atom-based quantum products that provide orders of magnitude improvements in sensing and computing applications. We are proud to work tirelessly to create and lead the quantum ecosystem towards meaningful advancements today and set the technology roadmap for tomorrow.ย

POSITION SUMMARYย

Withinย Infleqtion'sย Computing Product Groupย (CPG), the Hardware Engineering Team isย seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to own and deliver highperformance embedded and systems software enabling realtime quantum error correction and classical control at scale. This role focuses on integrating NVIDIAย highspeed interconnects with quantum errorcorrection decoding pipelines, in close collaboration with quantum software, physics, and hardware teams.ย
Thisย positionย is scoped as a seniorlevel individual contributor role: the engineer independently owns complex subsystems endtoend within an established architecture, solves technically hard problems,ย interacts directly with external partners,ย and mentors developing engineers, without defining longterm platform architecture.ย The engineer will also serve as a point-of-contact (POC) forย subsystemย hardware integration with NVidia'sย NVQLink.ย

JOB RESPONSIBILITIESย

Typically, you will be entrusted with:ย

  • Independently design, implement,ย validate, andย maintainย embedded and systemslevel software subsystems supporting realtime quantum error correction and control.ย
  • Translate quantum errorcorrection requirements (code distance, syndrome rates, latency budgets) intoย concreteย classical compute, memory, and interconnect requirements.ย
  • Design systems that meet deterministic latency, bandwidth, and reliability requirements across CPU, GPU, FPGA, and highspeed interconnect domains.ย
  • Serve as the technical pointofcontact for NVIDIAย NVQLinkย integration, including topology, bandwidth modeling, latency characterization, and failure modes.ย Involves direct interaction withย NVIDIA personnel as well as HPC experts in academia and US national labs.ย
  • Collaborate closely with Quantum Software, Physics, Electrical, and Systems Engineering to codesign hardware/software interfaces.ย
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex performance, scaling, and integration issues spanning firmware, drivers, OSย (Embedded Linux /ย bare-metalย environments), GPU runtimes, and hardware.ย
  • Develop andย maintainย validation infrastructure, performance benchmarks, and test harnesses for deterministic behavior and scaling.ย
  • Provide informal mentorship through design reviews, code reviews, and technical guidance.

Requirements

  • A degreeย (PhDย preferred)ย in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fieldย with experience in high-performance computing (HPC).ย
  • Demonstrated experience owning complex embedded or systemslevel software subsystems endtoend.ย
  • Strong experience with C/C++ in performancecritical systems.ย
  • Experience debugging across software and hardware boundaries (drivers, firmware, interconnects, timing).ย
  • Solid understanding of computer architecture fundamentals (memory hierarchies, interconnects, latency vs throughput tradeoffs).ย
  • Experienceย with hardware/software codesign for quantum control systemsย
  • Experience working in Linuxbased embedded or HPC environments.ย
  • Familiarity with GPU programming models (CUDA or equivalent) at a systems level.ย

WE HIGHLY VALUE:ย

  • Highperformance computing (HPC) systems design or deployment.ย
  • Familiary withย NVIDIAย CUDA-Qย
  • Direct experience with NVIDIAย Holoscanย Sensor Bridge, RDMA over Converged Ethernet,ย or similar highspeed coherent interconnects.ย
  • Experience supporting or developing errorcorrection decoding pipelines (quantum or classical).ย
  • Backgroundย similar toย advanced academic research groups in quantum architectures or decoding (e.g., largescale syndrome decoding research).ย
  • Experience performancemodelingย computeย systems as a function of problem size and algorithmic complexity.ย
  • Exposure to FPGAaccelerated or heterogeneousย computeย systems.ย
  • Detail-oriented mindset witha strong senseof ownership and technical accountability.ย
  • Positive, collaborative working style and enthusiasm for mentoring and developing engineers.ย

NOTE:

  • Job responsibilities and requirements areย illustrative,ย other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.ย
  • This position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Please note that any offer for employment may be conditioned on authorization to receive software or technology controlled under these U.S. export control laws and regulations without sponsorship for an export license.ย
