Job description

Heavy Burner Machine Operator - 2nd Shift
Metals USA is seeking a Heavy Burner Machine Operator in Seekonk, MA. Metals USA is a solid, growth oriented, carbon-steel (plate, beam, tube) distribution center servicing the defense, commercial, construction, aerospace and fabrication industries.
Responsibilities:
  • Reviews CAD drawings, work orders, tooling instructions or other written specifications.
  • Coordinates and executes material handling to be processed including operation of overhead crane.
  • Chooses correct material for the job according to work order. Inspects plates for thickness, length, width, heat number, grade specification and color code.
  • Sets up machine, selects proper burning tip, sets gas flow and machine feed rates, location of cutting, lines dimensions, tolerances, operational sequences and uses gauges, calipers, squares, rulers for measurement.
  • Sets up and aligns specified material or other fixtures in machine bed using gauges, templates, shims or hand tools.
  • Performs quality control inspections on finished product; for ISO-certified locations, performs In Process Quality Inspections.
  • Diagnoses problems and makes necessary adjustments and removes scrap from machine.
  • Stacks, bands and palletizes finished products for shipment to customers.
  • Performs the duties of a warehouse worker to include operate a forklift and overhead crane.
  • Performs all the duties of a light burner, and must burn plate > (greater or equal to) six inches of plate.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required to perform the duties of a plasma /oxy light burner in a production plant.
  • Complies with company and OSHA safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Adheres to Reliance Steel and Aluminum's Code of Conduct as well as customer confidentiality requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid OSHA Forklift License/Certification
  • Valid Overhead Crane License/Certification

Physical Demands:
Occupation requires physical activity more than 66% of the time (> 5.5 hours per day)
  • Stand, walk, sit, handling/fingering, reach outward, reach above shoulder, climb, squat or kneel or bend
  • Lift, carry, push and/or pull 51 -- 100 lbs. with assistance
  • Must have visual acuity (with or without correction as needed) to determine the required specifications of the material

Other Physical Requirements:
Must wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Steel-toed boots
  • Hard hats with chin strap; chin strap must be worn at all times while in the warehouse
  • Protective eyewear
  • Hand protection
  • Arm guards/sleeves
  • Hearing protection if required by the hearing conservation program

Work Environment:
May be exposed to some of the following working conditions.
  • Environmental temperature changes hot & cold
  • Working inside and outside of an industrial warehouse

  • Oils, dust, fumes and metallic particles
  • Day and night shifts

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Basic reading and writing comprehension in English (to read work order instructions, safety and policy manuals)
  • Basic measuring skills to read English & Metric systems and a tape measure, caliper or micrometer
  • Basic arithmetic skills to calculate and convert decimals and fractions
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows software (for loading up design to be burned)
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in operating burning machine
  • Experience operating an overhead crane / forklift operator
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limb coordination
